They deadpan the darndest things. And they make great targets. Some favorites:<\/p>\n<p>In a 1994 interview with Bob Costas on NBC, NBA commissioner David Stern scoffed at Costas\u2019s question about on-court taunting causing on-court fights. Stern smugly and dismissed Costas as wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The next NBA season, a rule was added: \u201cThere will be stricter enforcement of taunting rules that could provoke a fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, before the opening <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> in New Yankee Stadium, YES\u2019 Michael Kay conducted an on-field interview with MLB commissioner Bud Selig. When asked about the steep cost for seats \u2014 beginning at an obscene $2,500 per seat, per game \u2014 Selig said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, people talk about ticket prices, and I think the Yankees have been treated somewhat unfairly because I broke down all the ticket prices of all the seats, today, and they are affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Selig spoke a few feet from tickets being sold for $850 per. Similar seats the season before went for $250, up from $90 in 2007. And those \u201caffordable\u201d seats have remained conspicuously empty since this stadium opened.<\/p>\n<p>Then there was Roger Goodell\u2019s good-faith pledge on a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to Wisconsin, where he told Packers fans that he stands for only one thing: \u201cIt\u2019s all about our fans.\u201d Soon, Packers games would be \u201cflexed\u201d for TV money from early afternoon to night games \u2014 in the midst of winter.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15829556\"><img alt=\"MLB\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"661\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Rob Manfred<\/span><span>AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Back to Selig, who in 1997 explained the start of interleague play as \u201cbaseball\u2019s gift to fans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t. It was a gift to team owners who quickly jacked up the prices for tickets to interleague games as well as to games featuring records-smashing, mass-muscled steroid sluggers who had escaped his attention.<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, Selig\u2019s successor, Rob Manfred, declared MLB\u2019s \u201ctop priority\u201d is to embrace kids as future players and lifelong fans.<\/p>\n<p>MLB then returned to ridding the majors of 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon games and flexing \u2014 shameless baiting-and-switching \u2014 Sunday afternoon games, many of them family promotion dates, to late Sunday nights, both for TV money.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, as pressure increased on the NHL to address mounting concussions, commissioner Gary Bettman met the dead-serious topic by declaring it\u2019s not so much a medical issue as it is a public-relations problem.<\/p>\n<p>Bettman blamed the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> for \u201cfear-mongering\u201d leading to a \u201cwidely publicized misinformation\u201d campaign \u201crelating to a supposed casual connection between concussions and CTE [chronic traumatic encephalopathy].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, according to Bettman, to even consider that blows to the head \u2014 often delivered at top speed by elbows, sticks and fists \u2014 and headfirst falls to the ice as anything beyond accidental and incidental is foolish. Hockey doesn\u2019t cause life-altering head trauma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trainer has been escorted to the ice. He\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lying smelling salts! Johansen appears very groggy. He\u2019s bleeding from the head. A gurney has been summoned. Uh-oh, could be another NHL public relations problem!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, there\u2019s Goodell\u2019s classic tout that \u201cPSLs are good investments,\u201d which has led to those who spent $30,000 seated at games beside those who spent 10 bucks on a secondary ticket sales site.<\/p>\n<p>Now the kicker: Recall Dr. Gene Budig? In 1995 he was named president of the American League. Soon he\u2019d become the last president of the AL. But he did leave us with an impressive quote about his perceived position, stating he feels he represents \u201cthe public\u2019s trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that\u2019s why the position was eliminated. He had nothing to do. Public trust! That\u2019s a good one!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rudy_Give_me_Liberty\"><\/span>Rudy: Give me Liberty!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Rudy Giuliani made me chuckle late Tuesday afternoon. As a guest host on WABC Radio, he finished his interview with Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Virginia\u2019s Liberty University, a fundamentalist Christian college.<\/p>\n<p>Giuliani concluded with, \u201cYou do a great job, down there at Liberty University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giuliani being a sports fan, I\u2019d have thought he\u2019d know better. Liberty is so desperately eager to become a big-time sports college that in late 2016 it hired Ian McCaw as its athletic director.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15829571\"><img alt=\"Ian McCaw\" data- data- height=\"256\" width=\"166\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Ian McCaw<\/span><span>AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>McCaw was available as he\u2019d been fired as the AD at Baylor. It was on his watch that Baylor, the country\u2019s largest Baptist college, became the rape capital of college football. Two of Baylor\u2019s players had already been convicted of rape with many more outstanding charges. The claims against Baylor football players of rape and sexual assault from 2011-15 was 54, including one charged with multiple rapes.<\/p>\n<p>McCaw even allowed the recruitment of players tossed from other schools for serious misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>And in Ian McCaw, Falwell found his man!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIan\u2019s success really speaks for itself. You look at what Baylor was able to do during his tenure, it fits perfectly where we see our sports programs going.\u201d Yikes!<\/p>\n<p>As for McCaw, he said his new mission is \u201cto develop champions for Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Falwell had trespassing arrest warrants issued to two journalists who exposed the school\u2019s alleged negligence in responding to the virus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Yep, Rudy, they\u2019re doing a fine job, down there.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_fight_for_ticket_refunds_dont_forget_tack-on_fees\"><\/span>In fight for ticket refunds, don\u2019t forget tack-on fees <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Why in some places is it easy? You paid for your tickets, the game wasn\u2019t played, and now here\u2019s your money back \u2014 all of it.<\/p>\n<p>But here it takes forever, including ticket rep songs and dances \u2014 if the phone calls or emails are answered.<\/p>\n<p>Reader David Oniffrey: \u201cI bought two tickets for a Red Sox game [in Boston], was refunded the full amount, the $17 processing fee per ticket and $7 order fee \u2014 the entire amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s nice. But $24 per ticket in highly dubious tack-on fees makes for the kind of greed that makes financial fools sports\u2019 best customers.<\/p>\n<p>Relief from this malodorous practice in the form of elimination of tack-on charges and the return to face-value only ticket costs would be a good-faith demonstration by all sports on behalf of their fans.<\/p>\n<p>I take that back. What do fans have to do with sports?<\/p>\n<hr>\n<\/hr>\n<p>Last week Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless were delighted to have on their FS1 show, \u201cThe Undisputed,\u201d rapper Lil Wayne, extensive police record and all.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Fox host, however, addressed LW\u2019s unprintably vulgar, women-degrading, N-worded recordings. Why not? What\u2019s the problem, fellas? Lost your nerve or caught promoting and pandering to the inexcusable?<\/p>\n<hr>\n<\/hr>\n<p>John \u201cJJ\u201d Jastremski could use the kind of guidance WFAN apparently doesn\u2019t provide. Though his enthusiasm and eagerness to be enjoyed are obvious and admirable \u2014 he\u2019s ready to go, go, go \u2014 like Chris Berman, he seems happy to paint himself into a clown corner.<\/p>\n<p>His loud, \u201chey, dude,\u201d shtick on his \u201cJJ After Dark\u201d show is often heard as \u201cJJ Past His Bedtime.\u201d He can win this game with a plan that doesn\u2019t only target the easy. And he knows too many who have had gambling addictions to continue as the sports gambling voice of WFAN.
