“#Why Ethan Hawke created his first TV show with ‘The Good Lord Bird’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Ethan Hawke makes his debut as a series<\/a> creator with Showtime\u2019s Civil War-era miniseries \u201cThe Good Lord Bird.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was definitely the most challenging undertaking of my life,\u201d says Hawke, 49, who stars in and executive-produced the show. \u201cIt was like doing four or five indie movies back-to-back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premiering Oct. 4 at 9 p.m. \u2014 and based on James McBride\u2019s National Book Award-winning 2013 novel<\/a> of the same name \u2014 \u201cThe Good Lord Bird\u201d follows newly freed young slave Henry, nicknamed \u201cOnion\u201d (Joshua Caleb Johnson), who ends up with famous abolitionist John Brown (Hawke) and his band of soldiers on a crusade to end slavery. It culminates in the 1859 raid on the Army depot at Harpers Ferry, Va. \u2014 the prelude to the Civil War.<\/p>\n

(Brown ultimately became the first person in US history to be executed for treason; his 1859 hanging is the show\u2019s attention-grabbing opening.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not playing John Brown the historical figure, I\u2019m playing John Brown as Onion sees him and as James McBride spins a big yarn,\u201d says Hawke.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a strange tone to walk. It\u2019s a tone [Quentin] Tarantino has hit and the Coen brothers have hit, where it\u2019s half-ridiculous and half-blistering and half-electric and half-silly and half-preposterous. That was the joy of it \u2014 it\u2019s like taking a high dive. You don\u2019t really know how it\u2019s going to go, you just have to throw yourself off and hope you live.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Good Lord Bird\u201d mixes fact and fiction: \u201cAll of this is true. Most of it happ<\/a>ened,\u201d reads a tongue-in-cheek on-screen announcement. In addition to Brown, the fictional Onion encounters iconic figures such as Frederick Douglass (\u201cHamilton\u201d star Daveed Diggs).<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a big Mark Twain fan, and I just felt like McBride lapped Mark Twain,\u201d says Hawke. \u201cIt\u2019s like [\u2018The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn\u2019], but Huck Finn flirts with talking about race in America, and McBride dives all-in. So I just wanted to share it with everybody I knew, and the way to do that is to perform it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Harpers Ferry raid is one of the most dramatic events in US history, and I couldn\u2019t believe it hasn\u2019t been 15 movies,\u201d he says. \u201cThey made about a hundred movies about the Alamo\u2026[the raid] is such an incendiary story, and to talk about it forces you to have other conversations that are hard. That\u2019s why it\u2019s been avoided.\u201d<\/p>\n

The seven-episode miniseries is a rare TV role for Hawke, whose career has primarily been on the big screen, where he\u2019s racked up four Oscar nominations to date (\u201cBest Supporting Actor\u201d nods for \u201cBoyhood\u201d and \u201cTraining Day\u201d and \u201cBest Adapted Screenplay\u201d nods for \u201cBefore Sunset\u201d and \u201cBefore Midnight\u201d).<\/p>\n

He says, though, that creating a TV series has not been a longtime ambition.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really just this story. I was thinking, \u2018How would you tell that book in two hours?\u2019 You wouldn\u2019t be able to reduce it enough for a movie,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd my wife [producer Ryan Hawke] was like, \u2018Dummy, there\u2019s this thing called limited series now, wake up!\u2019 So in a lot of ways, I always just thought of it as a long movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

But despite the massive undertaking by Hawke to co-create \u201cThe Good Lord Bird\u201d \u2014 along with \u201cHell on Wheels\u201d writer Mark Richard \u2014 and to executive-produce the series, he says it wasn\u2019t a hardship to star in it as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love acting. I loved being on set with the guys and playing this character,\u201d he says. \u201cIn a lot of ways, the production was the work, and the work was the play.<\/p>\n

\u201cGene Hackman has my favorite line: \u2018They pay me to wait. I\u2019ll act for free. It\u2019s the waiting I hate.\u2019 \u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
