\n Tens of thousands of Texans were ordered not to use the water after a six-year-old boy died from a rare brain-eating amoeba.<\/p>\n

Josiah McIntyre died earlier this month, testing positive for Naegleria fowleri after playing at a public splash pad and a sprinkler at home in Lake Jackson in suburban Houston, officials and his family said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Initial tests of the water supply came back negative \u2014 but another round of tests came back positive Friday<\/a> from three locations, including a hydrant, the splash pad storage tank and a spigot at the boy\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality issued an urgent advisory warning people not to use tap water for any reason except to flush toilets.<\/p>\n

It included the boy\u2019s hometown Lake Jackson \u2014 a city of more than 27,000 \u2014 as well as Freeport, Angleton, Brazoria, Richwood, Oyster Creek, Clute and Rosenberg, as well as for Dow Chemical-Freeport and the Clemens and Wayne Scott state prison units.<\/p>\n

While working to disinfect the whole system, officials lifted the \u201cdo not use water\u201d advisory Saturday \u2014 saying it would be safe if boiled, and listing a series of safety protocols<\/a> for showering or swimming.<\/p>\n

Naegleria fowleri is a free-living microscopic amoeba commonly found in warm freshwater that \u201ccan cause a rare and devastating infection of the brain,\u201d according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/a><\/p>\n

The dead boy\u2019s mother, Maria Castillo, told ABC13<\/a> that she was \u201cangry, upset, sad and heartbroken.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was an active little boy,\u201d she said of her baseball-obsessed son.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a really good big brother. He just loved and cared about a lot of people,\u201d she said, saying that knowing how he contacted it \u201cgives us peace of mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
