Keeping your Instagram profile public is key to reaching a wider audience. But it also leaves your posts\u2019 comment sections exposed to spam. Fortunately, with Instagram\u2019s privacy controls, you can have the best of both the worlds and pick who can comment on your posts. Here\u2019s how to use them.<\/p>\n

Open the Instagram app<\/a> on your iPhone<\/a> or Android device<\/a>. Head into your profile tab by tapping your display picture\u2019s thumbnail in the bottom-right corner.<\/p>\n

Pull out the side menu by tapping the hamburger button in the top-right corner and then navigate to Settings > Privacy.<\/p>\n

Enter the \u201cComments\u201d menu.<\/p>\n

Here, the first \u201cAllow Comments From\u201d option allows you to limit which group of people can leave a comment on your photos and videos.<\/p>\n

\"Decide<\/p>\n

By default, if you have a public profile, this setting is configured to \u201cEveryone.\u201d You can change it to receive comments from\u00a0only the people you follow, your followers, or both.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, you can individually block people from commenting on your posts. To do that, tap \u201cBlock Comments From\u201d in the \u201cComments\u201d settings.<\/p>\n

From the text field at the top of the screen, search for the person\u2019s Instagram handle, and when they come up in the results, hit the blue \u201cBlock\u201d button beside their entry. You can add as many Instagram profiles to this list as you\u2019d like.<\/p>\n

If you want to reverse this decision later down the road, simply return to this page and tap the \u201cUnblock\u201d button next to the user you want to unblock from commenting.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting that Instagram won\u2019t notify the person that you have blocked. They will still be able to drop new comments on your posts, however, these comments won\u2019t be visible to anyone but them\u2014not even you.<\/p>\n

In case you still want to read these blocked users\u2019 comments, you can instead take advantage of Instagram\u2019s restrict feature.<\/p>\n

When you restrict someone on Instagram, their comments will be visible to you and the person themselves. However, Instagram hides them by default, and shows a comment from a restricted user as \u201cRestricted Comment\u201d under your posts. You can read it by tapping the \u201cSee Comment\u201d option or remove it completely with the adjacent \u201cDelete\u201d button.<\/p>\n

For restricting an Instagram account, visit the person\u2019s profile and then tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.<\/p>\n

Choose \u201cRestrict\u201d from the list.<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s someone who is still pestering you on Instagram, you can block the user as the last measure or switch to a private profile.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
