\n Delaware State University has denied that Joe Biden has ever been a student there \u2014 after the presidential candidate\u2019s claim that he \u201cgot started\u201d at the historically black college.<\/p>\n

The 77-year-old Democrat made his claim while praising historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) during a town hall event last October before the South Carolina Democratic primary, video shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got started out of a HBCU, Delaware State,\u201d he told pupils at Wilson High School in Florence<\/a>, which was founded in 1866 by the Freedmen\u2019s Bureau for Black children seeking an education.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, I don\u2019t want to hear anything negative about Delaware State. They\u2019re my folks,\u201d he told the pupils to chuckles.<\/p>\n

However, the politician\u2019s claim came back to haunt him when the university said he had only been a commencement speaker there decades after his start in politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cVice President Biden did not attend DSU,\u201d the college\u2019s director of news<\/a> service, Carlos Holmes, told The Washington Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Instead, he was only a commencement keynote speaker in 2003 and 2016 \u2014 a far cry from the start of the political career for Biden, who has been a Senator for Delaware since 1973.<\/p>\n

He was \u201cawarded an honorary doctoral degree\u201d but was never a student, Holmes stressed.<\/p>\n

DSU \u2014 founded in 1891 as the State College for Colored Students \u2014 is about 40 miles south of the University of Delaware, where Biden graduated in 1965 with a double major in political science<\/a> and history.<\/p>\n

He went on to study at Syracuse University College of Law \u2014 where he failed a class after being accused of plagiarism.<\/p>\n

His career since then has been dogged by accusations of misleading voters, including others over his education.<\/p>\n

Equally, he has been dogged by repeated slip-ups \u2014 with President Trump even repeatedly calling for him to be drug tested before any debates.<\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s rep did not immedia<\/a>tely respond to requests for comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
