It\u2019s one of several similar posts seen in the UK and Australia, and follows a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/aug\/25\/qanon-conspiracy-theory-explained-trump-what-is\">pattern<\/a> in many posts linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory. Here are 5 common myths, debunked<\/span>]<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_power_of_memes\"><\/span>The power of memes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For the past five years, my research has looked at how strangers talk with each other about politics on Facebook. I\u2019ve focused on four English constituencies \u2013 Stoke-on-Trent Central, Burton and Uttoxeter, Bristol West, and Brighton Pavilion \u2013 tracking conversations through public pages, posts, and public information on people\u2019s timelines and profiles.<\/p>\n<p>Through <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ray.yorksj.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/4580\/\">2015, 2017<\/a>, and 2019 UK <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> elections, I saw the increased polarization of those Facebook conversations and with it increased incivility, partisanship, and sectarianism. I was struck by the rising use of memes and how a handful of core themes made their way from meme to belief. During the 2019 election, I noticed how memes from far-right US Facebook pages were being posted and spread via people in the UK constituencies I was studying.<\/p>\n<p>I recently decided to explore how the upcoming US election might be translating into partisan ideas on Facebook in the UK. I decided to focus on one meme, and the individual Facebook users who cared enough about that issue to share or comment publicly \u2013 and see where it took me.<\/p>\n<p>So, in late August, I returned to Facebook after a seven-month gap and picked the meme that happened to be at the top of my timeline \u2013 a post from the group Migrant Watch shared by the page of UKIP Brighton &amp; Hove. This was consistently one of the most active meme-seeders among the constituency party Facebook groups I follow.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d found links during the last election between the active seeding of anti-migrant, anti-immigration memes by UK users and US far-right organizations and individuals, and so I expected to find similar links through that meme. Author provided<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"QAnon_conspiracies\"><\/span>QAnon conspiracies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Of the 45 people to comment on this Migration Watch meme shared by Brighton &amp; Hove UKIP \u2013 27 were women and most, from what I could tell from their profiles, were middle-aged grandmothers. When I looked at what other content these women were sharing, I found memes about anti-animal cruelty, anti-Black Lives Matter protests, anti-BBC proms, and content in favor of Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the women were also worried about the threat to \u201cour\u201d children posed by pedophile rings. And in this, they demonstrated the next level of political meme sharing \u2013 freely interacting with content from both the UK and the US.<\/p>\n<p>For one woman that meant sharing conspiracy theories from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/informedmamawolf\">Mama Wolf<\/a>, one of the Facebook accounts circulating QAnon content. One of these was entitled \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/informedmamawolf\/posts\/173081114193987\">Epstein Islands frequent flyers<\/a>\u201d a hotch-potch of unfounded accusations linking Hilary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Madonna, the Queen, and other (mostly black or Jewish) \u201celites\u201d to the late Jeffrey Epstein, a global child trafficking network, drugs harvested from children\u2019s blood, and secret messages coded into Trump\u2019s press briefings on his plans to save the children.<\/p>\n<p>I found one of the same Facebook users who had shared the Migration Watch meme also sharing a post calling for people to flood the BBC\u2019s Facebook page on August 25 with the #saveourchildren tag. \u201cThey won\u2019t cover child trafficking so we will bring it to them. TY Lim\/Shutterstock on Twitter\"><i class=\"icon icon--inline icon--twitter--dark\"\/><\/a>Far-right memes from the US are being shared and spread in the UK. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-photo\/penang-malaysia-april-25-2018-facebook-1078801013\">TY Lim\/Shutterstock<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hidden_radicalization\"><\/span>Hidden radicalization<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The bubble communities we inhabit on Facebook shield us from alternative views to our own, while also making it easier for views to be reinforced, enhanced \u2013 groomed even \u2013 towards more radical positions.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook encourages pools of the like-minded, whether through architecture that encourages what the activist Eli Pariser\u2019s termed \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=-FWO0puw3nYC&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PT3&amp;dq=The+Filter+Bubble:+What+The+Internet+Is+Hiding+From+You&amp;ots=g5GmIpxRT0&amp;sig=rU84kGCkj1lUHeFXMNPX410F_7E#v=onepage&amp;q=The%20Filter%20Bubble%3A%20What%20The%20Internet%20Is%20Hiding%20From%20You&amp;f=false\">filter bubbles<\/a>,\u201d or what the psychologist Daniel Kahneman <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books\/about\/Thinking_Fast_and_Slow.html?id=oV1tXT3HigoC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=kp_read_button&amp;redir_esc=y#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">called \u201ccognitive ease\u201d<\/a> \u2013 our willingness to believe ideas that are familiar, comfortable, easy to believe, and to avoid ideas that would take effort to accept. It\u2019s also possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> Facebook\u2019s algorithms to manipulate public opinion, as the investigative work of journalists such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/membership\/2018\/sep\/29\/cambridge-analytica-cadwalladr-observer-facebook-zuckerberg-wylie\">Carole Cadwalladr<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/craigsilverman\/american-conservatives-fake-news-macedonia-paris-wade-libert\">Craig Silverman<\/a> has shown.<\/p>\n<p>But seeing a radical meme isn\u2019t enough to trigger more of the same content, it\u2019s how we interact with the content that matters to Facebook. The depth of interest needed to comment and then share a political idea will trigger more of the same and, potentially, take the user through increasing levels of radicalization.<\/p>\n<p>A slightly racist granny can quickly become groomed towards <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-conspiracy-theories-spread-online-its-not-just-down-to-algorithms-133891\">adopting<\/a> more radical views. Or a fellow mum be taken from conspiracy theories about the Coronavirus Act to those about <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2020\/07\/30\/fact-check-teigen-degeneres-oprah-not-epstein-flight-logs\/5494709002\/\">Epstein\u2019s island<\/a>.
