“#Malin Ackerman says her role on ‘Soulmates’ is a ‘bit like playing God’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Love leads Malin Ackerman on a strange path in the new AMC drama \u201cSoulmates.\u201d<\/p>\n

The episodic anthology series<\/a>, premiering Oct. 5 at 10 p.m., is set in a near-future in which science<\/a> has developed a test to definitively tell people who their soulmate is.<\/p>\n

It hails, app<\/a>ropriately enough, from \u201cBlack Mirror\u201d writer Will Bridges and was co-written by Brett Goldstein (\u201cTed Lasso\u201d).<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a really interesting concept to me. It\u2019s so layered and it feels a little bit like playing God,\u201d Ackerman, 42, tells The Post. \u201cI was so curious to see how these characters would be affected by this test, and what taking it would do to a possibly great relationship that they\u2019re already in \u2014 or finding their soulmate and what that means.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Ackerman\u2019s episode, \u201cBreak on Through,\u201d she stars as troubled Martha, who meets the equally lost Kurt (Charlie Heaton, \u201cStranger Things\u201d) one lonely evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cCharlie is so sweet, and so committed and invested. I love performing with actors who are in it for the right reasons,\u201d she says. \u201cThey just get into character and do anything for that character. It was freezing cold and it was raining [during filming], but there were no complaints. He just went for it because he wanted it to be the best it could be, and I really respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martha and Kurt soon become involved with The Church of Righteous Transition, a mysterious group that promises to help people whose soulmates have died.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Martha specifically, she\u2019s just choosing all the wrong men and so this opportunity obviously appeals to her, to not have to go into another bad relationship,\u201d says Ackerman, who compares the show\u2019s soulmate scenario to seeing a psychic in the real world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always had an interesting relationship with psychics \u2014 I\u2019m a bit hesitant because I\u2019m happy in my life, so I don\u2019t want to mess with that! I don\u2019t want someone to say something that would take me off-track.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Swedish-born Ackerman lives in LA with husband, British actor Jack Donnelly (\u201cAtlantis\u201d) and is known for a variety of big-screen blockbusters such as \u201cWatchmen\u201d and \u201c27 Dresses\u201d and shows including \u201cThe Comeback\u201d and \u201cBillions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her character in the latte series, Lara Axelrod, is married to Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis). Their relationship crumbled, and Lara hasn\u2019t appeared in the fifth season, but there\u2019s a possibility that she might return.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve left it open-ended so we\u2019ll see,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m happy to go back. We left off on great terms and I love everyone there. It just depends on the storyline and the writers.<\/p>\n

In addition to \u201cSoulmates,\u201d Ackerman also stars in two upcoming movies\u00a0 \u2014 \u201cFriendsgiving\u201d on Oct. 23 opposite Aisha Tyler and Kat Dennings, and \u201cChick Fight,\u201d opposite Alec Baldwin, out Nov. 13.<\/p>\n

\u201cI produced both of them, so I\u2019m really looking forward to [their releases],\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve been acting for a while now and I love it, but I do enjoy being behind the scenes and putting projects together \u2026 being part of the creative process.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
