\n FarmVille<\/em>, one of the first of Facebook<\/a>\u2018s staple game<\/a>s, is shutting down after 11 years. While\u00a0FarmVille\u00a0<\/em>was a contentious part of Facebook, it was nevertheless one of the platform\u2019s earliest gaming successes. So this is the end of an era \u2014 whether a good or bad one is entirely dependent upon whether you played\u00a0FarmVille\u00a0<\/em>back in the day.<\/p>\n

The game is being put out to pasture (lol) because Facebook is ending its support of Flash-based games at the end of the year. According to creator Zynga<\/a>, in-game purchases will be available until November 17, and it\u2019s planning some in-game events \u201cdesigned to make your remaining time with FarmVille<\/em> even more enjoyable\u201d which\u2026 wow, that sounds unexpectedly melancholic.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was a time FarmVille<\/em> was a staple of life on Facebook. Either you played it or you knew someone who did. The game would flood your news<\/a> feed with\u00a0FarmVille\u00a0<\/em>happ<\/a>enings, whether you wanted it to or not.\u00a0FarmVille<\/em>\u2018s popularity really cannot be overstated. At its peak, it accounted for as much as 10 percent<\/a> of Facebook\u2018s revenue, with player counts surpassing 80 million<\/a> a few months after its launch. It\u2019s nowhere near as popular as it once was, having been supplanted years ago as the byword for \u201cthat one game your parents or kid cousins can\u2019t stop playing\u201d by the likes of\u00a0Candy Crush\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Fortnite<\/em>\u00a0respectively.<\/p>\n

It was a game designed to get you hooked, and Zynga built a behemoth on ensnaring a new demographic of gamers who didn\u2019t fully understand how addictive these types of games could be. An artifact of the era is this article<\/a> from CNN, which describes the player base thus: \u201cAsk your friends who fill your Facebook newsfeed with their \u201cFarmVille\u201d accomplishments, and you\u2019ll find that most of them are embarrassed. They think the game is stupid and boring, but they just can\u2019t stop playing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Naturally, Zynga is not leaving you bereft of options if you really want to get your hit of casual farming sim goodness. FarmVille: Country Escape <\/em>and\u00a0FarmVille 2: Tropic Escape\u00a0<\/em>are still around, and that\u2019s just the games from the original\u00a0FarmVille\u00a0<\/em>creators. According to its FAQ<\/a>, Zynga is offering a bonus package to\u00a0FarmVille\u00a0<\/em>players who move to\u00a0Tropic Estate\u00a0<\/em>(which you can find here<\/a>, FYI). It also soft-launched\u00a0FarmVille 3\u00a0<\/em>last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

FarmVille<\/em> will permanently shut down on December 31.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
