“#City-dwellers are finding out camping is gross<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n When Christina Ramos announced she was going camping for the first time this summer, her friends got worried.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey thought I wasn\u2019t going to make it,\u201d said the 29-year-old New Jersey native, who was planning an outdoors-oriented trip<\/a> to Michigan for her friend Paola\u2019s 29th birthday.<\/p>\n

Determined to prove them wrong, Ramos spent weeks preparing for the trip, shelling out hundreds of dollars on what she thought was must-have gear from Amazon and Target.<\/p>\n

Despite all her meticulous planning \u2014 and a roommate who even filmed an instructional video about how to properly set up a tent \u2014 Ramos had trouble assembling it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got to the campground, I don\u2019t know why but I couldn\u2019t get the video rolling,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

As the pandemic presses on, city-dwellers are turning to camping as a safe, social<\/a>ly distant alternative to typical travel, with online booking tools Campspot, Tentrr and Hipcamp all reporting upticks in usage. But newbies are quickly discovering there\u2019s a lot more to sleeping outside than s\u2019mores and sing-alongs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re amazed by the amount of bugs that they see and the variety, and how big they can get,\u201d said Rafael Lopez, who runs the NYC Hiking and Backpacking Group on Facebook.<\/p>\n

His group\u2019s membership has been increasing steadily, at about 15 people a day. But the reports from newcomers aren\u2019t always positive: \u201cThe lack of bathrooms is what scares people,\u201d said Lopez. \u201cAnd when you do have a bathroom, it\u2019s the surprise of how dirty they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chelsea Janke tried to ward off potential surprises with a little micromanagement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a stage manager, which means I\u2019m prepared for every emergency,\u201d said the 25-year-old Washington Heights resident.<\/p>\n

And so for her first camping trip, in Lake George with boyfriend Jason McGuire in August, she had everything she needed \u2014 or so she thought.<\/p>\n

For a hike, her backpack was weighed down by a book, Band-Aids, medicine, water bottles, washcloths \u2014 even an umbrella.<\/p>\n

\u201cJason insisted on carrying it and it would get really heavy, and he\u2019d be like, \u2018Jesus, what did you pack?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Still, the rookie forgot a few crucial things, including layers. On a cold night, she had to borrow sweatpants from her boyfriend.<\/p>\n

Travel writer Natalie Compton wasn\u2019t totally inexperienced when she started camping regularly this summer, but she had never done it on her own.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had never been in charge of the logistics,\u201d said the 29-year-old. \u201cI was never the one packing the food and packing the tent.\u201d<\/p>\n

One decision she immediately regretted was failing to buy a sleeping pad: \u201cIt felt like I woke up and was hit by a bus,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Since then, she\u2019s done overnights in the Catskills, Virginia and Connecticut. She has even chronicled some of her adventures<\/a> for the Washington Post. But that doesn\u2019t mean that she\u2019s beyond the occasional mistake. There was the time she brought a portable charger that wasn\u2019t actually charged, and the night she neglected to zip up her tent the whole way. When she woke up, she was soaked with rain.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy sleeping bag was like a tea bag, dipped in a cup of tea,\u201d Compton said.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, camping converts say that the hassles are worth it. Janke calls peering up at the stars \u201cone of the most breathtaking moments of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Ramos surprised her naysaying friends by surviving her camping trip \u2014 and even enjoying it. The views of Lake Superior were stunning, she said, and the whole trip was surprisingly affordable.<\/p>\n

But the best part? They were so remote, \u201cthere was literally no cell service,\u201d Ramos said. \u201cIf we ever had to go into town to pick up stuff, as soon as we got [there] my phone would start blowing up with all the messages I\u2019m missing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her response was swift: \u201cSorry guys, I don\u2019t have that much service. I\u2019ll talk to you when I get back.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
