The New York Times\u2019 Adam Liptak and others cite Judge Amy Coney Barrett\u2019s opinion in John Doe v. Purdue University as evidence of her \u201calmost uniformly conservative voting record\u201d \u2014 absurdly, Jacob Sullum explains at Reason<\/a>. A female student made sex-abuse claims against her ex months after their breakup, when he reported her suicide attempts to two resident assistants and an adviser. That \u201cultimately led Purdue .\u2009.\u2009. to suspend John for a year, forcing him to resign from ROTC and ending his plans for a career in the Navy.\u201d Barrett and two other judges ruled that he could sue over a process that, she wrote, \u201cfell short of what even a high school must provide to a student facing a days-long suspension.\u201d The accuser neither testified nor filed a formal complaint; Purdue didn\u2019t let the accused student\u2019s witnesses testify; two of the three administrators who judged him \u201ccandidly stated that they had not read the investigative report.\u201d Says Sullum: If Barrett\u2019s opinion \u201cupholding the due process rights of someone facing sexual-assault charges does not count as a \u2018liberal result,\u2019 the term has lost all meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russiagate chronicle: Collusion From Other Side<\/strong><\/p>\n

Newly declassified FBI documents reveal that the Trump-Russia investigation boils down to \u201cthe liberal inflation of unsubstantiated \u2014 indeed, unattributable \u2014 rumor into purported probable cause,\u201d reports National Review\u2019s Andrew C. McCarthy<\/a>. \u201cIn an effort to depict Donald Trump as if he were in an espionage conspiracy with the Kremlin, the Obama administration used bogus information, from a man the FBI suspected was an actual Russian spy, to brand as a suspected Russian spy a former US naval-intelligence officer who had actually been a CIA informant.\u201d In other words, \u201cthe Clinton campaign, and ultimately the Obama administration, colluded with Russians for the purpose of accusing Donald Trump of .\u2009.\u2009. yes .\u2009.\u2009. colluding with Russians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Religion beat: Believing Catholics Aren\u2019t \u2018Nuts\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2017, Sen. Dianne Feinstein told Amy Coney Barrett, then up for confirmation to the Seventh Circuit, that the \u201cdogma lives loudly within you.\u201d The accusation showed, notes Charles J. Chaput at First Things<\/a>, \u201cclearly how some in our political class now view Catholics who are more than merely \u2018nominal\u2019 in their faith.\u201d It\u2019s fine if you\u2019re a mere cultural Catholic who occasionally brandishes his rosary beads. \u201cBut if you\u2019re the kind of Catholic who seeks to discipline his or her life around Catholic beliefs regarding marriage and family, religious freedom, sex and abortion \u2014 well, that\u2019s a different matter.\u201d Then you get smeared as a \u201cnut,\u201d as Bill Maher called Barrett. \u201cIn a sane age, these kinds of attacks, more app<\/a>ropriate to a restroom wall than discourse in a nation of laws, would be seen as loathsome.\u201d<\/p>\n

FBI watch: Comey\u2019s Credibility Challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy should anyone believe James Comey?\u201d asks the Washington Examiner\u2019s Byron York<\/a>. \u201cOctober Surprise,\u201d a \u201cnew book by Washington Post reporter Devlin Barrett,\u201d is a \u201ccompelling portrait\u201d of the former FBI director that \u201ccasts serious doubt\u201d on his credibility. Focusing on October 2016, when Comey revealed \u201cthe FBI had reopened the Hillary Clinton email investigation,\u201d the book has numerous \u201cexamples of Justice Department officials believing Comey lied to them.\u201d Indeed, the book says, \u201cat key moments involving the Clinton or Russia cases, Comey\u2019s version of events is starkly at odds with accounts provided by Justice Department officials\u201d \u2014 including Loretta Lynch, then attorney general<\/a>. So why, York wonders, is Comey\u2019s word \u201cuntrustworthy concerning his conflict with Lynch but the gold standard concerning his conflict with Trump?\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Crickets on Trump\u2019s Taxes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spectator USA\u2019s Freddy Gray asks<\/a>: \u201cIs anyone really surprised that Donald Trump\u2019s tax affairs are opaque? Or that he is not as rich as he claims? Is it really all that horrifying that he has for years claimed business losses in order to offset his significant income tax liability?\u201d The answer: \u201cOf course not.\u201d Which is why the Times\u2019 \u201cbig Trump tax-files splash on Sunday is therefore something of a flop.\u201d It\u2019s well-reported, sure, \u201cbut there is no smoking gun,\u201d and it might just \u201cfade away.\u201d<\/p>\n
