Disney is returning to Pride Rock again. The House of Mouse is developing a sequel to Jon Favreau\u2019s 2019 CG-animated remake of\u00a0The Lion King\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and has tapp<\/a>ed Oscar-winning\u00a0Moonlight<\/em> director\u00a0Barry Jenkins<\/strong> to helm the follow-up.\u00a0It\u2019s unclear if the film will adapt the direct-to-video animated\u00a0The Lion King II<\/em>, or if it will include the film\u2019s all-time banger of a song, \u201cOne of Us.\u201d If not\u2026deception and\u00a0disgrace<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Walt Disney Studios has set Barry Jenkins to direct\u00a0the Lion King<\/em> sequel, Deadline reports. The follow-up to Favreau\u2019s 2019 mega-hit will be penned by Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the first installment, and has already completed an initial draft of the script.<\/p>\n

The Lion King<\/em> sequel will once again be a CG-animated film done in the same photorealistic technology<\/a> Favreau used in the 2019 film and in 2016\u2019s\u00a0The Jungle Book<\/em>. There are no details yet about what the sequel will be about, but Deadline reports that the story will \u201cfurther explore the mythology of the characters, including Mufasa\u2019s origin story.\u201d There goes the dream of this being a straight adaptation of the 1998 direct-to-video animated sequel\u00a0The Lion King II: Simba\u2019s Pride<\/em>, far and away the best of the Disney\u00a0direct-to-video sequels, partly because it continued the first film\u2019s tradition of doing a loose adaptation of a Shakespeare play (this time was\u00a0Romeo and Juliet<\/em>) and featured two all-time great Disney songs: \u201cHe Lives In You,\u201d which was later used for\u00a0The Lion King\u00a0<\/em>Broadway musical, and \u201cOne Of Us.\u201d
\nHonestly, I would be happy to forgive all if they just managed to include \u201cOne Of Us\u201d in this unasked for The Lion King<\/em> sequel.<\/p>\n
