\n Pete Davidson\u2019s \u201cThe King of Staten Island\u201d was pulled unceremoniously \u2014 and mysteriously \u2014 from drive-in theatres last week, reports Variety.<\/p>\n

The semi-autobiographical film, which offers a comic take on SNL star\u2019s Pete Davidson\u2019s childhood in the borough, was instead released Friday for video only.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no explanation,\u201d from Universal, one drive-in theater owner told the outlet. \u201cThey changed their mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another theater owner told Variety,\u00a0\u201cThis caused a considerable amount of ill will with customers who bought tickets online showing up for the Thursday 7 p.m. show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Director Judd Apatow took to Twitter<\/a> last week to inform eager fans that they would have to wait until Friday to see the film \u2014 at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cTHE KING OF STATEN ISLAND IS ONLY OPENING ON VOD FRIDAY. IT IS NOT OPENING IN THEATERS.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInsiders\u201d at Universal blamed the change on an internal misunderstanding, Variety said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe King of Staten Island\u201d was always intended to premiere exclusively on-demand, however, some executives unintentionally booked the film in about 100 theaters,\u201d an unnamed source is quoted explaining.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they realized the mistake, the studio went back to theaters and asked them not to play it.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is not the first time that Universal has taken a film away from theater owners.<\/p>\n

In April the studio decided to forego the release of \u201d Trolls World Tour\u201d to all movie theater and instead sent it straight Video-on-demand. Costing many major film house hundreds in ticket sales.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
