Blumhouse\u2019s new take on Stephen King<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Firestarter<\/em><\/strong> has announced its first cast member: Zac Efron<\/strong>. There\u2019s no indication of who Efron is playing, but it\u2019s safe to assume he\u2019s not going to play protagonist\u00a0Charlie McGee, a little girl with the powers of\u00a0pyrokinesis.\u00a0Keith Thomas <\/b>(The Vigil<\/i>) will direct the film that is being adapted by writer Scott Teems <\/b>(Halloween Kills, Rectify<\/i>), who will also executive produce.<\/p>\n

Zac Efron wants in on some of this Stephen King adaptation action, and so he\u2019s joining the cast of\u00a0Firestarter<\/em>. Published in 1980,\u00a0Firestarter<\/em> was previously adapted into a not very good 1984 movie starring Drew Barrymore. Here\u2019s the book\u2019s official synopsis:<\/p>\n

Andy McGee and Vicky Tomlinson participated in a drug experiment run by a veiled government agency known as The Shop. One year later, they marry. Two years later, their little girl, Charlie, sets her teddy bear on fire by simply staring at it.<\/p>\n

Now that Charlie is eight, she doesn\u2019t start fires anymore. Her parents have taught her to control her pyrokinesis, the ability to set anything \u2013 toys, clothes, even people \u2013 aflame. But The Shop knows about and wants this pigtailed \u201cultimate weapon\u201d. Shop agents set out to hunt down Charlie and her father in a ruthless chase that traverses the streets of New York and the backwoods of Vermont.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019m going to assume that Efron is playing Charlie\u2019s dad Andy, who has powers of his own. But it might be neat to see Efron play one of the story\u2019s villains, like\u00a0Captain James \u201cCap\u201d Hollister, director of The Shop, or hitman\u00a0John Rainbird, who pretends to be a janitor to befriend and gain Charlie\u2019s trust.\u00a0Martin Sheen played Hollister while George C. Scott played Rainbird in the \u201984 film. But again, it\u2019s more than likely Efron is playing Andy, who was portrayed by\u00a0David Keith in the previous movie.<\/p>\n

This new\u00a0Firestarter<\/em> will be produced by Jason Blum<\/strong> and Akiva Goldsman<\/strong>. Martha De Laurentiis<\/strong>, who was an associate producer on the 1984 adaptation, will executive produce. While there\u2019s always a knee-jerk reaction to remakes, the 1984\u00a0Firestarter<\/em> really is kind of a crapp<\/a>y movie, so there\u2019s plenty of room for improvement here (although the original movie did have a bitchin\u2019 score from\u00a0Tangerine Dream).<\/p>\n

Efron is charismatic and well-known enough to give the new\u00a0Firestarter<\/em> some weight. Now the film just has to find itself the right young actress to play Charlie, who is the main focus of the story. No pressure.
