\n Atlanta police shooting victim Rayshard Brooks was having an amiable chat with cops about his daughter\u2019s birthday just seconds before he was gunned down as he tried to escape arrest, new bodycam footage shows.<\/p>\n

Brooks, 27, slurred his words as he spoke to lead officer Garrett Rolfe and his colleague, Devin Brosnan, outside a Wendy\u2019s restaurant Friday night \u2014 one later torched in protests over the deadly police arrest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just had a few drinks, that\u2019s it \u2026 It was my daughter\u2019s birthday,\u201d Brooks told Rolfe, adding that he had been \u201cintent to have a good time\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can walk home. I just don\u2019t want to be in violation of anything,\u201d he told them in the calm, friendly-sounding exchange, hoping to avoid a drunk-driving arrest. \u201cI don\u2019t wanna refuse anything,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

The interaction only turned when the officers went to cuff Brooks \u2014 who immedia<\/a>tely struggled and tried to flee, the footage makes clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrop the Taser! Stop fighting!\u201d the officers shouted at Brooks, who was seen in other footage app<\/a>earing to fire the Taser as he tried to run away.<\/p>\n

A series<\/a> of gunshots then rang out \u2014 with a short pause before onlookers immediately expressed outrage at the deadly shooting of a black man by white cops.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou murderer! what the f\u2013k!\u201d one man could be heard shouting amid unintelligible screaming and shouting.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou f\u2014ing shoot him? That\u2019s totally unnecessary,\u201d someone shouted at the officers, while another man said, \u201cMan, that\u2019s messed up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rolfe \u2014 a seven year veteran of the force \u2014 was fired and Brosnan, who joined in September 2018, was put on administrative leave, officials confirmed late Saturday.<\/p>\n

It followed calls from Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who had insisted the shooting was not a \u201cjustified use of deadly force.\u201d<\/p>\n

The officers\u2019 boss, Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields, also resigned over the fatal incident, citing a \u201cdeep and abiding love for this City and this department.\u201d<\/p>\n

Atlanta Police Union representative Ken Allen told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) that rank and file was \u201cdevastated\u201d by Rolfe\u2019s firing and demoralized at losing Shields\u2019 leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly wouldn\u2019t be proactive if I was an officer now,\u201d he told AJC.<\/p>\n

He called Rolfe \u2014 who recently had nine-hours of use-of-force training \u2014 an \u201cexceptional officer\u201d who followed proper procedure in his handling of Brooks\u2019 attempted arrest.<\/p>\n

The killing sparked a new wave of protests in Atlanta, where demonstrations following the May 25 police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis had largely simmered down.<\/p>\n

The Wendy\u2019s restaurant outside which Brooks was fatally shot was set ablaze Saturday night. Other demonstrators marched onto Interstate-75, stopping traffic, before police used squad cars to hold them back.<\/p>\n
