“#Proud Boys celebrate after Trump seemingly calls them out during debate<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n CLEVELAND, Ohio \u2014 Members of the Proud Boys right-wing militia group celebrated online Tuesday evening after what they perceived as a shout out from President Trump during the chaotic first presidential debate.<\/p>\n

The president told the group to \u201cstand back and stand by\u201d after Fox News<\/a> moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump to condemn white supremacists and militia groups following deadly clashes and rioting in US cities Kenosha, Wis. and Portland, Ore.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want me to call them? Give me a name. Give me a name,\u201d the commander in chief said to Wallace and opponent Joe Biden after they asked him to publicly disavow social<\/a> extremists \u2014 something he himself has repeatedly asked of Biden.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhite supremacists and right-wing militia,\u201d Wallace responded.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho would you like me to condemn? Who?\u201d the president asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cProud Boys need to stand back and stand by, but I\u2019ll tell you what, somebody has got to do something about Antifa and the left because this is not a right-wing problem, this is a left-wing problem,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Members of the group immediately began pledging allegiance to Trump on the encrypted messaging app<\/a>, Telegram, according to multiple reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump told the proud boys to stand by because someone needs to deal with ANTIFA \u2026 well sir! We\u2019re ready!!\u201d wrote one Proud Boy in a screenshot circulating online.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump basically said to go f\u2014 them up! this makes me so happy,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cStanding by, sir,\u201d another man wrote in the chat.<\/p>\n

It appeared that the group\u2019s Seattle chapter has already adopted the president\u2019s comment as their motto according to one screenshot<\/a> with the words \u201cStand Back\u201d and \u201cStand By\u201d surrounding a crest.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear how Trump intended his remarks to come across, but Biden seized on the comments in a tweet after the debate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis. This is Donald Trump\u2019s America,\u201d the former veep, 77, wrote, sharing a screenshot of the chat.<\/p>\n

On their website, the Anti-Defamation League defines the Proud Boys<\/a> as a misogynistic, Islamophobic, transphobic and anti-immigration group whose members \u2014 estimated to be several-hundred strong \u2014 also espouse white supremacist and anti-Semitic ideologies.<\/p>\n

The group, which was founded in 2016, was also involved in the infamous Charlottesville \u201cUnite the Right\u201d rally where one woman was killed when she was mowed down by a Nazi sympathizer.<\/p>\n

Trump, 74, famously responded to the alt-right rally by claiming there were \u201cvery fine people on both sides\u201d and has since been dogged by claims from critics that he courts support from white supremacists.<\/p>\n

He has denied that and subsequently affirmed his condemnation of such extremists.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
