The world of business<\/span> is often denoted as cut-throat, competitive, and ruthless. And while this may of course<\/span> be true, there\u2019s also room for kindness \u2014 that\u2019s at least what Sarah Friar, the CEO<\/span> of Nextdoor<\/a>, believes.<\/p>\n

A seasoned CEO<\/span> \u2014 she was previously at Square<\/span> and Salesforce \u2014 Friar is a great believer that profit and kindness aren\u2019t mutually exclusive. In fact, she\u2019s known for offering actionable insights on how monetization can be driven by responsibility and purpose.<\/p>\n

Nextdoor is a hyperlocal social<\/a> networking service for neighborhoods that seeks to bring people<\/span> and local businesses<\/span> together.<\/p>\n

It monetizes by offering\u00a0brands, local businesses<\/span>, and public authorities and governments the opportunity to advertise on its platform so long as they are relevant to each community<\/span>.<\/p>\n

In other words<\/span>, the message<\/span> needs to add value<\/span> to Nextdoor\u2019s members and the platform has a responsibility to ensure its advertisers are vetted to meet these criteria.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to walk the talk, there\u2019s actually no other way to do it. You have to be authentic and genuine,\u201d Friar adds.<\/p>\n

Friar really is best placed to chat about how advertising<\/span> can be used for good (yes, you\u2019ve read that right!) to empower local communities and individuals while also generating revenue<\/span> \u2014 and I look forward to digging deeper into that topic<\/span> during our discussion at TNW2020 this week.<\/p>\n

Personally, I\u2019m also very keen to hear what Friar has to say about the challenges<\/span> she\u2019s endured in growing a community-driven platform. For example, how can businesses<\/span> such as Nextdoor deal with the proliferation of racism<\/span>, or other types, of hate speech<\/span>?<\/p>\n

In a world so focused on growth<\/span> \u2014 sometimes at all costs<\/span> \u2014 and given the current zeitgeist, I\u2019d say kindness has never been so important.<\/p>\n
