\n Most of the media<\/a> keep waving off any suggestion that mass-scale mail-in balloting could prove a disaster this November. But what if the bungling already seen here in deep-blue New York also happ<\/a>ens in Florida, Pennsylvania or some other swing state?<\/p>\n

Remember: It was Democratic officials who produced the infamous \u201cbutterfly ballot\u201d in Florida in 2000 \u2014 turning normal, in-person voting into a confusing mess.<\/p>\n

The snafu\u2019d New York ballots that went out marked as \u201cmilitary absentee\u201d rather than \u201cmilitary\/absentee\u201d are confusing many citizens \u2014 who may fail to vote as a result. And sending incorrectly addressed return envelopes may yet mess with the count, even if Board of Election officials get the right ones off.<\/p>\n

Blaming vendors is all well and good \u2014 but these are huge red flags of serious quality-control issues. As Jiong Wang of Brooklyn Heights told The Post, \u201cThis is not stoking confidence in the election system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like many other Brooklynites, Wang got a return envelope for his ballot with the name and address of a different Brooklyn voter filled in; his wife got his return envelope.<\/p>\n

The Post has already tracked down a lot of those misaddressed-envelope mistakes \u2014 each of which could still wind up invalidating that vote. This is a rolling disaster.<\/p>\n

And what of the errors that don\u2019t get caught before people have already voted?<\/p>\n

These glitches, ironically, come from bungled efforts to make vote-by-mail easier. Does anyone have much confidence that New York \u2014 or any other state run by Democrats who support universal absentee voting \u2014 is taking enough precautions against illegal \u201cballot harvesting\u201d? That\u2019s where third-parties intercept the ballots for naive voters and fill them in for their candidates.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not just President Trump and his allies questioning the process.<\/p>\n

City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, a progressive Democrat, told The Post, \u201cPeople were already not trusting this process, and they were already not trusting the Board of Elections to count the ballot right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Democrats in Congress continue to hold up the next pandemic-relief bill, which includes funds for states to beef up election security, because they insist it include bailouts for near-bankrupt blue states like New York and Illinois.<\/p>\n

New York City\u2019s Board of Elections has screwed up time and again \u2014 sometimes with \u201chelp\u201d from politicians who demand big changes without offering the funds to make things work well. But this is far from the only state where elections are overseen by bottom-rung political hacks who\u2019ve been handed a patronage job.<\/p>\n

If Congress \u2014 and state officials \u2014 doesn\u2019t set realistic national standards soon, the nation\u2019s at serious risk of uncertain results in multiple states.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
