To address challenges such as performance tuning, scalability, and updates, Microsoft introduced the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/azure-sql\/sql-managed-instance\/#product-overview\">Azure SQL Managed Instance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Azure SQL Managed Instances take the difficulty out of managing a SQL environment. It uses an evergreen Microsoft SQL, which always uses the latest version and features. SQL upgrades, patching, and security are fully managed and automated. High availability, disaster recovery, and automated backups make Managed SQL easy to administrator and use.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Provisioning_an_Azure_SQL_Managed_Instance\"><\/span>Provisioning an Azure SQL Managed Instance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To get started, navigate to the Azure SQL service offering within the Azure Portal. Click on \u201cCreate Azure SQL resource\u201d to get started.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"imgchk9 alignnone wp-image-7053 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/thumbcache\/0\/0\/a3da9bfee178e4e002097b6397027ef8\/p\/uploads\/2020\/09\/89afac6b.png\" alt=\"Click on &quot;Create Azure SQL resource&quot; to get started provising your instance.\" width=\"1240\" height=\"642\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A couple of options are available for SQL deployments. Though this article focuses on the middle option, SQL managed instances, there are a few other options that may be useful.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>SQL Databases:<\/strong> Flexible options for both single databases and elastic pools, this is a modern take on managed database offerings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SQL Managed Instances:<\/strong> Excellent for migrations and \u201clift-and-shift\u201d operations, an easy to administrator and powerful SQL environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SQL Virtual Machines:<\/strong> Traditional SQL Server that can be fully managed by an administrator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this case, we are going to work with the SQL managed instance. As you can tell, this is not exactly the cheapest of options but does provide a lot of utility. If you need customization of the collations, time zones, public endpoints, and tagging, you will want to review those pages in depth.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, create the SQL managed instance. Word of caution, this process can take up to 6 hours, per their documentation. Though this can be done through SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), it can also be done via the Azure Portal. You can choose to connect via a virtual machine with SSMS installed that can then connect to this instance, via code using the available connection strings, or if you choose to allow the public endpoint to be available, by remote SSMS installation. For ease of management, we will demonstrate how to allow the remote endpoint option.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Any time you open a port externally, you run the risk of unauthorized access, make sure to fully secure, and consider if this is the best option.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With that caveat out of the way, first, navigate to the Networking pane on your SQL managed instance. Choose \u201cEnable\u201d on the public endpoint (data) option and click on \u201cSave.\u201d This option by itself won\u2019t allow an SSMS installation to access this instance, as the necessary ports needed to be opened in the Network Security Group (NSG).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"imgchk9 alignnone wp-image-7060 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/thumbcache\/0\/0\/a59a29f0a6b714431898db9c270b7ec4\/p\/uploads\/2020\/09\/2b3fe4ed.png\" alt=\"Choose &quot;Enable&quot; on the public endpoint (data) option and click on &quot;Save&quot; under Networking.\" width=\"1131\" height=\"783\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>On the overview page, locate the Virtual network\/subnet section, and click on the link to the managed instance configuration.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"imgchk9 alignnone wp-image-7061 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/thumbcache\/0\/0\/f8dc9ec122fe102a448161b749f8d618\/p\/uploads\/2020\/09\/e6eb1d70.png\" alt=\"Click on themanaged instance configuration link.\" width=\"1230\" height=\"520\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Once under the virtual network resource assigned to this SQL managed instance, navigate to the subnet pane and take note of the Security group.
