Check out our session on \u2018Redefining the way we work\u2019 here.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When COVID-19 first hit, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/20\/opinion\/coronavirus-california.html\">futurist Peter Schwartz warned<\/a> businesses would soon embark on a grand experiment unlike any before: \u201cWe\u2019re going to learn the hard way, rather quickly and by necessity, everything that can be done remotely. We\u2019re not going back to zero afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For many of us, the reality of that shift is a lot more<em> lo-fi<\/em> than anticipated. Sure, mastering Microsoft Teams presented a temporary challenge, but maintaining professionalism whilst handling the banalities of day-to-day life in between Zoom calls has proven more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>For people managers, ensuring employees find proper balance in their lives is essential to our \u2018new normal\u2019. After all, switching off is especially harder <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/microsoft-teams-virtual-commute-141044437.html\">without our daily commute<\/a>, and the result is we often carry work stress even after we\u2019ve signed off on Slack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pandemic is obviously taking a toll on everyone: we need to consider mental health, wellbeing, work\/life balance, and even added pressure for parents and caregivers to juggle home-schooling alongside their regular work,\u201d says Melanie Collins, Global Head of People at Dropbox. \u201cWe worry about burnout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To help, Collins explains that Dropbox offers employees and their dependents free counselling sessions, and the company routinely shuts down so that workers can reset and recharge without feeling guilty for doing so.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_real_change_at_work_tie_empathy_goals_to_executive_compensation\"><\/span>For real change at work, tie empathy goals to executive compensation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>HubSpot\u2019s Katie Burke, agrees with Collins\u2019 prioritization. Burke says HubSpot\u2019s core value is empathy, and the company was able to reinforce morale by showing unadulterated understanding this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Burke adds this includes keeping business matters transparent, especially as the pandemic continues to affect more companies, and by extension, more people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn times of uncertainty, people are looking for as much information and clarity as possible. We share all the information that we can, including financial considerations and board decks,\u201d says Burke.<\/p>\n<p>Establishing empathy as a core value of a business sounds nice, but it seems <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate to hold business managers accountable for achieving that goal. That\u2019s why Snapchat\u2019s parent company, Snap Inc., tied executive compensation to achieving empathy-related goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did this to show how important it is to live those values, to not only thrive at our company, but to really serve our community,\u201d says Lara Sweet, Snap\u2019s Chief People Officer.<\/p>\n<p><em>[READ:\u00a0It\u2019s 2020, your team\u2019s mental health and morale should be a priority by now]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs people leaders, we must think about what is important to our teams, and make sure we\u2019re providing that, whether it\u2019s training, benefits programs, or inclusive leave practices,\u201d adds\u00a0Sweet. \u201cIt\u2019s really important, while we\u2019re all at home, that we\u2019re thinking about what might have served before \u2014 how do we reinvent that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt 2020 presents a difficult challenge for companies.
