\n Surgeon General Jerome Adams on Sunday encouraged people to wear a mask to stop the spread of the coronavirus \u2014 saying the face coverings don\u2019t infringe on Americans\u2019 \u201cfreedom\u201d and will help to get the economy up and running.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome feel face coverings infringe on their freedom of choice- but if more wear them, we\u2019ll have MORE freedom to go out. Face coverings [leads to] less asymptomatic viral spread [leads to] more places open, and sooner!\u201d Adams wrote on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cExercise and promote your freedom by choosing to wear a face covering!\u201d<\/p>\n

The surgeon general had originally said in February that masks are \u201cnot effective\u201d to prevent transmission, and urged people to protect themselves by staying home when they are sick and washing their hands thoroughly with soap and water.<\/p>\n

He changed his tune in early April after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidelines that Americans should wear face-coverings in public.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, orders to wear face masks have been met with resistance in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n

During a tour of a Ford plant in Michigan last month, President Trump donned a mask but took it off before he met with workers.<\/p>\n

Asked why he wasn\u2019t seen in the mask, he said, \u201cI didn\u2019t want to give the press the pleasure of seeing it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
