The 37-year-old Atikamekw woman and mother of seven, Joyce Echaquan, can be seen in the video suffering extreme discomfort while she calls for help, pleading for viewers to come get her, and is continually insulted by hospital staff in her final moments.<\/p>\n<p>Echaquan enrolled in the Joliette hospital about 30 miles Northeast of Montreal for ongoing stomach pains, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/y3zymv\/indigenous-woman-recorded-nurses-making-racial-slurs-to-her-right-before-she-died?utm_source=vicecanadafbca&amp;utm_content=1601487904&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;fbclid=IwAR0cE1oqlP3wF2JPEpsLLlvxCPIKqws8Tuk5E0tBc-Qm_MU77eJkr95AsTw\">Vice<\/a> reports. The hospital was a three-hour drive from her home community, the First Nations reserve in Manawan.<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/quebec-atikamekw-joliette-1.5743449\">CBC report<\/a> provides that one of the nurses involved in the patient\u2019s treatment has been effectively dismissed from the hospital, in addition to an administrative investigation and full coroner\u2019s inquiry being launched, according to Integrated Health and Social Services of Quebec.<\/p>\n<p>The originally posted video has now been hidden on Facebook, but remaining clips surfacing online show parts of the tragic incident as it unfolded. One clip shows the woman crying out for help as nurses make remarks about her in French. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Warning: The language in this story is disturbing.<\/p>\n<p>A painful video of an Atikamekw woman in a Quebec hospital shows the nurses attending her to be rude and dismissive.<\/p>\n<p>The woman died shortly after posting the video live on Facebook. <\/p>\n<p>Full story tonight on APTN National <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rvl8zH4W7r\">pic.twitter.com\/rvl8zH4W7r<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 APTN News (@APTNNews) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/APTNNews\/status\/1311035177708195840?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 29, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>According to translations provided by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/entry\/quebec-indigenous-death-racist-hospital-staff_ca_5f74b1d7c5b6374c55880703?ncid=fcbklnkcahpmg00000001&amp;fbclid=IwAR0yh5Zu8nn7WOFTJ16BybAbXaMwRJFD6vQIZ-rRFeTH8MYBfdMqyzh1MhM\">Huffington Post Canada<\/a>, the nurses are heard telling Echaquan that she is \u201cdumb as hell,\u201d and \u201cbetter off dead.\u201d They continue to further insult the patient, saying she made \u201cbad choices\u201d in life, that she should \u201cthink about her kids,\u201d and asking her if she is \u201cfinished fooling around?\u201d One nurse also asks what the woman\u2019s children would say if they saw her in that state. <\/p>\n<p>Echaquan\u2019s death was recorded live for viewers later that evening. A vigil was held for Echequan in front of the Joliette hospital Tuesday evening, in addition to several others.<\/p>\n<p>The Premier of Quebec, Fran\u00e7ois Legault, made statements Tuesday at a press conference related to COVID-19, saying the comments made by nurses and their handling of the situation was \u201cnot acceptable.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really don\u2019t think that we have this kind of way of dealing with First Nations people in our hospitals in Quebec. Yes, there is some racism in Quebec. We\u2019re working on that,\u201d he stated, after <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/7042193\/francois-legault-sticks-to-position-that-systemic-racism-doesnt-exist-in-quebec\/\">previously denying the existence of systemic racism in Quebec<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n<p>The event caused outrage among Canadians, re-emphasizing the need to address inequities and injustices on a systematic level in order to prevent similar occurrences in the future.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Of course she recorded it.
