\n New York is making \u201creally great progress\u2019\u2019 in its fight against the coronavirus, registering the lowest number of daily deaths since the pandemic started \u2014 but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s out of the woods, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose numbers can change in a week \u2026 and once they change, you can\u2019t change them back that quickly,\u2019\u2019 the governor said, noting other states\u2019 struggles with rising figures.<\/p>\n

There were 23 coronavirus deaths reported in New York on Saturday and an increase of 1.1 percent in new positive cases of the contagion, the governor said. Seventeen of the deaths were in hospitals and six in nursing homes.<\/p>\n

At the height of the pandemic, New York was registering around 800 deaths a day, and nearly 50 percent of those tested were positive for the virus.<\/p>\n

New York City\u2019s daily infection rate was down to 1.4 percent, although the figure for the borough of Staten Island was 2.9 percent, the highest for it in five days. It was at a low of 1.1 percent Friday before jumping up the next day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat can be a Saturday aberration, but we\u2019re watching it,\u201d the governor said of Staten Island\u2019s situation.<\/p>\n

Otherwise,\u00a0\u201cwe breathe a sigh of relief today,\u201d the governor said. \u201cToday is another great day for New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, he warned Manhattan and the Hamptons on Long Island that if their residents don\u2019t begin to social<\/a>-distance better \u2014 with the local governments cracking down on scofflaws \u2014 he would shut them down again.<\/p>\n

Cuomo added that he is extending enrollment in the state\u2019s healthcare exchange by another 30 days.<\/p>\n

He said it\u2019s still unclear what college learning in the state will look like this fall.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
