Success and scale are the prime motivators; there are bills to pay, teams to grow, ideas to execute, and returns to deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, though, I feel it\u2019s important for all these stakeholders to be aware of the fact that by starting a company, disrupting an industry, and solving a problem they are also able to create something that transcends the very\u00a0business they\u2019ve created.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t roll your eyes. It\u2019s true \u2014 and Friar agreed:\u00a0\u201cIf you create a flywheel whereby your <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b7a1c7a4\">business model<\/span> creates <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3c935452\">cash<\/span> for you to reinvest into what your platform does for good, then you\u2019re really on to something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let that sink in, like <em>really<\/em> sink in.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_need_to_walk_the_walk\"><\/span>You need to walk the walk<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are countless quotes that highlight the evils of capitalism, that in some way allude to profit and kindness being mutually exclusive \u2014 but, please, erase this notion from your mind. You can totally make money while also having a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> purpose.<\/p>\n<p>If we look at Nextdoor, Sarah explained how the company follows a three-pronged monetization approach. Advertisers pay to be featured on the platform\u2019s main <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>feed, but they are vetted to ensure that they\u2019re \u201cendemic to a local neighborhood\u201d and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8219a0b4\">add<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9a09492a\">value<\/span> to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-71a318eb\">users<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The company also works with local <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d48fcfcc\">businesses<\/span>, allowing them to use the platform to communicate with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-638a3255\">customers<\/span> by putting local deals into the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-960a5dd5\">newsfeed<\/span>. The third source of income comes from public <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4f7d1c16\">agencies<\/span>. \u201cA huge part of local good and keeping neighborhoods safe is making sure they\u2019re getting <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ad9eca4a\">access<\/span> to the best, most current information, often from their local officials,\u201d Friar added, noting how this has become increasingly important as a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4ed9cae2\">result<\/span> of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-609ba12f\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Working with kind brands, in this case, advertisers \u201ccan be good, and it can be a strong business model,\u201d but\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019ve got to walk the walk, there\u2019s actually no other way to do it. You have to be authentic and genuine,\u201d Friar said.<\/p>\n<p>In this day and age, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f0be8aa1\">businesses<\/span> are serving increasingly savvy consumers. Clients are holding companies accountable and demanding greater transparency. It\u2019s no longer possible to make claims that go unchecked. \u2014 and this is a good thing. Right?<\/p>\n<p>If a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e974af93\">company<\/span> builds its <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d986599b\">brand<\/span> on the principle of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9063a4b5\">sustainability<\/span>, it must ensure its entire process of sourcing, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-66e11cdf\">production<\/span>, and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-eeb95e82\">delivery<\/span> meets adequate requirements \u2014 or else face mounting criticism. Often the damage is irreparable.<\/p>\n<p>The same applies when it comes to building kindness into your core product. If your product is about connecting people and bringing local communities closer together, helping people help others, then you have to make sure kindness transcends your product.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk about our purpose, being kind, we need to make sure that we\u2019re living up to that moniker. So first and foremost, we\u2019re founded in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-555ca6e8\">trust<\/span>. So we want to make sure that when you come on Nextdoor, you feel safe and like you\u2019re part of your <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b33bc31a\">community<\/span>,\u201d noted Friar.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure this is the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b1909e6d\">case<\/span>, Nextdoor spends a lot of time verifying a person\u2019s existence and address. This level of scrutiny requires additional resources and it does, Friar admitted, slow down <span id=\"urn:enhancement-85a23af8\">growth<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we were a \u2018growth at any cost\u2019 platform,\u2019 we wouldn\u2019t do this,\u201d Friar said, explaining that these measures are in place to safeguard <span id=\"urn:enhancement-81de0864\">users<\/span> who often share a lot of things on the platform that make them vulnerable.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kindness_must_seep_into_everything\"><\/span>Kindness must seep into everything<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Being a kind company means Nextdoor also has a responsibility to ensure that content shared on its platform is, well, kind.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in June, Friar published <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.nextdoor.com\/2020\/06\/11\/a-nextdoor-where-everyone-belongs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saying \u201cthat racism has no place on Nextdoor.\u201d The statement came a couple of weeks after George Floyd was killed in the US by a white policeman kneeling on his neck \u2014 but the truth is that cases of racial profiling on Nextdoor had been a problem long before then.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several outlets, including <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/splinternews.com\/nextdoor-the-social-network-for-neighbors-is-becoming-1793846596\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Splinter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattlemag.com\/article\/nextdoorcom-becoming-home-racial-profiling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, had rung the alert bell as early as 2015, prompting Nextdoor to unveil its solution to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2017\/02\/for-nextdoor-eliminating-racism-is-no-quick-fix\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2017, about a year before Friar joined the platform. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dealing with the proliferation of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a26bddcd\">racism<\/span>, or other types of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4be03b9e\">hate speech<\/span>, comes with the territory but it can\u2019t be ignored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last couple of months, we rolled out something called the neighbor pledge.
