The unorthodox activities are part of a revamp of the US Army\u2019s physical-fitness training field manual, now called the \u201cFM 7-22 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/armypubs.army.mil\/epubs\/DR_pubs\/DR_a\/ARN30714-FM_7-22-000-WEB-1.pdf\" title=\"\">Holistic Health and Fitness.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoldiers can use short, infrequent naps to restore wakefulness and promote performance,\u201d the booklet recommends, adding that they should \u201ctake longest nap possible\u201d when \u201cavailable sleep time is difficult to predict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, the Army manual suggests that soldiers get seven to eight hours of sleep a night, which soldiers can help facilitate by listening to soothing music or taking a warm bath before hitting their cots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Army has always had an internal dynamic that real men don\u2019t need sleep and can just push on, and it\u2019s incredibly stupid,\u201d former commander of US and coalition forces in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005 Lt. Gen. David Barno <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/01\/us\/army-naps.html\">told the New York Times.<\/a> \u201cCombat is a thinking man\u2019s business, and your brain doesn\u2019t function without sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barno took pains to \u201cprotect eight hours of sleep a night\u201d while deployed in an effort to keep his guys clearheaded during battle.<\/p>\n<p>Past research has shown that fatigued troops can experience impaired judgment, delayed reaction times and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sleep.org\/how-soldiers-deal-with-sleep-deprivation\/#:~:text=When%20they're%20in%20combat,traumatic%20stress%20disorder%20(PTSD).\">according to Sleep.org.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sufficient slumber isn\u2019t the only pursuit prescribed by the Army\u2019s new guidelines, which were overhauled for the first time eight years. Meditation and success visualization exercises are also encouraged \u2014 along with the signature pullups and rucksack runs.<\/p>\n<p>The manual even features a whole chapter on \u201cspiritual readiness,\u201d defined as the \u201cability to maintain beliefs, principles, and values needed to provide support in times of stress.\u201d The methods themselves are part of the military\u2019s holistic wellness campaign, which began years ago when elite Special Operations units would bring in trainers, dietitians and wellness coaches to aid in their exercises, the New York Times reports.<\/p>\n<p>This health regimen might seem more befitting of day spa attendees than those fighting on the front lines. However, the self-help-esque tips aim to help mitigate injuries suffered during combat, which in turn, increases the military\u2019s effectiveness while reducing the cost to taxpayers in terms of state disability fees.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time the military has tried to introduce holistic health measures to their ranks.
