A new cinematic universe is brewing.<\/p>\n

Warner Animation Group is developing a Dr. Seuss Cinematic Universe, based on several titles from the whimsical children\u2019s author. A back-to-basics version of\u00a0The Cat in the Hat<\/strong><\/em>, an original sequel called Thing One and Thing Two<\/strong><\/em>, and an adaptation of the classic graduation gift\u00a0Oh, the Places You\u2019ll Go!<\/em><\/strong> are the first three projects in the works, and a relatively unknown filmmaker named J.J. Abrams<\/strong> will be producing the latter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vanity Fair<\/a> broke the news<\/a> about the forthcoming Seuss Cinematic Universe, which sounds like it will be more conceptual than literal. \u201cThe Cat in the Hat will not meet the boy in\u00a0Oh, the Places You\u2019ll Go<\/em>, nor would the Things go visit the Lorax,\u201d said Dr. Seuss Enterprises president Susan Brandt<\/strong>. \u201cWhile it will all feel like part of the Seuss universe, they live in their worlds, and they\u2019re not necessarily going to interact in the same films\u2026Our goal would be to mirror the way [Dr. Seuss] did his portfolio of books. The color palettes are different, the architecture is different, but you look at those and go, \u2018That\u2019s a Dr. Seuss book.\u2019 If we properly translate [his] characters and his messaging, each one creates a different story, but it\u2019s still Seuss DNA. That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to go try to do.\u201d
\nFirst up is a new animated version of\u00a0The Cat in the Hat<\/em>, which will attempt to wash away the bad taste of the live-action Mike Meyers version by aiming to be \u201cmore authentic to what his vision was,\u201d according to Warner Animation Group head Allison Abatte<\/strong>. Filmmakers\u00a0Erica Rivinoja <\/strong>(South Park<\/em>) and\u00a0Art Hernandez<\/strong> (Disney\u2019s Planes<\/em>) are on board as directors, while Jared Stern<\/strong>, who created Netflix\u2019s Green Eggs and Ham<\/em> series<\/a>, is set to executive produce. The movie is aiming for a theatrical release date in\u00a02024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Thing One and Thing Two<\/em>, centering on chaotic characters introduced in\u00a0The Cat in the Hat<\/em>, will follow in 2026<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cAll ages delight in the wackiness, the carefreeness, the silliness that are the Things,\u201d Brandt explained. \u201cWe don\u2019t know where they come from. They\u2019re just free spirits, man. They run about, they thump and they bump, and they have all sorts of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oh, the Places You\u2019ll Go!<\/em>, which will be more of a stand-alone story based on the book about growing up and moving into new stages in life,\u00a0is hoping to arrive in 2027<\/strong>, with Abrams and Bad Robot\u2019s head of motion pictures Hannah Minghella<\/strong> producing. This will be Abrams\u2019 first animated project, and it\u2019s unclear if he\u2019ll be involved with future Seuss Cinematic Universe movies or shows.<\/p>\n
