“#Ex-Twitter<\/a> CEO in hot water for controversial comments<\/strong>”

\n Ex-Twitter CEO Dick Costolo tweeted late Wednesday that \u201cMe-first capitalists\u201d would be the first ones \u201cshot in the revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jumping into a recent controversy over employee activism at tech companies \u2014 kicked off when Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced in a blog post this week<\/a> he was banning at-work discussions about politics and societal issues \u2014 Costolo bemoaned the end of an era where \u201ctech companies used to welcome lively debate about ideas and society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Costolo said that the openness within Silicon Valley companies\u00a0 was what \u201cdifferentiated tech culture from, say, Wells Fargo culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Things got testy, however, when another Twitter user said that tamping down political activism within companies would \u201cbe rough for people who want an activist job on a tech person\u2019s salary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMe-first capitalists who think you can separate society from business are going to be the first people lined up against the wall and shot in the revolution,\u201d Costolo shot back<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ll happ<\/a>ily provide video commentary.\u201d<\/p>\n

The remarks were met with swift blowback from conservatives on Twitter, with many complaining about the violent language in the tweet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis tweet is an actual violation of twitter TOS for glorifying violence,\u201d alt-right personality Mike Cernovich replied. \u201cThat aside, thanks for publicly endorsing the mass murder of your political adversaries. This is clarifying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Costolo was in charge of Twitter from 2010 until 2015 when he was replaced by Jack Dorsey, and is currently a venture capitalist.<\/p>\n

Representatives for Twitter and Costolo did not immediately respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
