\n Texas Sen. Ted Cruz blasted CNN host Chris Cuomo during a contentious interview over the widely criticized decision of his older brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, to bar nursing homes from turning away coronavirus patients at the pandemic\u2019s height.<\/p>\n

The attack came during a heated segment<\/a> on Wednesday\u2019s \u201cCuomo Prime Time\u201d that more closely resembled the messy first presidential debate, with both men repeatedly talking over<\/a> each other and accusing each other of politicizing the COVID-19 response.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is something disgusting that Democrats are doing, that [presidential candidate] Joe Biden does and that you do, which is you try to blame the people who\u2019ve lost their lives on your political enemies,\u201d said the Republican lawmaker, making his first app<\/a>earance on Cuomo\u2019s show. \u201cIt\u2019s particularly not right when your brother has presided over the state with the highest death rate in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWas it a mistake when your brother implemented a policy that nursing homes had to accept COVID-positive patients and endanger the lives of tens of thousands of seniors in New York State?\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo avoided giving a yes-or-no response on the charge.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy brother was the first one to say that there was a learning curve and that mistakes were made and that they changed things as soon as they could,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The governor\u2019s Department of Health in March issued an order barring nursing homes statewide from turning away patients on the basis of a positive coronavirus test, even as Cuomo publicly acknowledged that seniors are among the most vulnerable to the bug.<\/p>\n

Cuomo \u2014 who partially reversed the order in May, without conceding a mistake \u2014 has dismissed criticism over the order as politically motivated, despite bipartisan calls for an outside inquiry into the state\u2019s at least 6,500 coronavirus deaths in nursing homes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo the nursing homes was the sum total of the entire problem in the country? That\u2019s what it was?\u201d Chris Cuomo \u2014 himself a coronavirus survivor \u2014 fired back at Cruz.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt led to New York having 33,000 deaths compared to Texas having 15,000 deaths, and Texas has 50 percent more population than New York does,\u201d countered Cruz. \u201cTell your brother to get on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo called on Cruz \u2014 a typically reliable ally of President Trump \u2014 <\/span>to scrutinize the federal response as closely as he did New York\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy brother will stand for his own record,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy don\u2019t you talk to the president the way you talk to my brother, Ted? You afraid of him [Trump]? You think he\u2019ll smack you down at home?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m talking about the president,\u201d Cuomo continued. \u201cThe one who called you a liar. The one who said your wife was ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n

While vying for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, Trump derisively nicknamed his fellow candidate \u201cLyin\u2019 Ted Cruz,\u201d tweeted an unflattering photo of Cruz\u2019s wife side-by-side with eventual first lady Melania and insinuated that Cruz\u2019s father was connected to the assassination of President Kennedy.<\/p>\n

After dropping out of the race, Cruz refused to endorse Trump, but begrudgingly said he would vote for him, despite the abuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou actually wonder why you don\u2019t have a lot of Republicans that want to come on your show,\u201d Cruz told Cuomo.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just bring up my brother for half the interview because you\u2019re such a fair guy,\u201d fired back Cuomo, his voice dripping with sarcasm, and his face reddening. \u201cYou play it so straight down the middle.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
