\n President Trump made an explicit app<\/a>eal for Catholic votes Thursday evening while claiming anti-Catholic bigotry \u201cpredominates\u201d the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n

Trump delivered the broadside remotely in pre-taped remarks streamed into the Archdiocese of New York\u2019s Al Smith 75th annual fundraiser \u2014 a traditional dinner that was turned into an unprecedented virtual event because of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Trump labeled the Democratic Party as anti-Catholic just moments after his Democratic rival for the presidency, former Vice President Joe Biden, a Catholic, spoke.<\/p>\n

Trump praised former New York Gov. Al Smith, a Democrat and first Catholic to run for president as a \u201chappy warrior\u201d who battled \u201canti-Catholic prejudice that you see even today coming from the Democrat Party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump, a Republican who is locked in a tough re-election battle and trailing in national and many battleground polls, repeated his Democrats are anti-Catholic accusation while discussing his nomination of federal appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett, a Catholic, to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not stand for any attacks against Judge Barrett\u2019s faith,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnti-Catholic bigotry has absolutely no place in the United States of America. It predominates in the Democrat Party and we must do something immedia<\/a>tely about it \u2014 like a Republican win. And let\u2019s make it a really big one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump then brought up the hot-button issue of abortion. The Catholic Church opposes abortion.<\/p>\n

Like the church, he told listeners that he\u2019s a \u201cdefender of the sacred right to life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember that when you vote,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThat\u2019s so important to the Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden and the Democratic Party support a woman\u2019s legal right to an abortion \u2013enshrined in the 1973 Supreme Court Roe vs. Wade ruling.\u00a0 But anti-abortion activists hope that the appointment of more conservative-minded judges like Barrett might chip away, if not repeal, the right to an abortion.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery child \u2014 born and unborn \u2014 is made in the holy image of God,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Trump also boasted that he helped deliver federal funds to aid parochial schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope you remember that on November 3,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Trump, of course, praised the work of the Catholic Church and the \u201cgrit\u201d of New Yorkers who endured the worst of the COVID-outbreak. The White House released excerpts of his remarks earlier Thursday that focused on these aspects of his speech \u2014 not the attacks on Democrats.<\/p>\n

Trump accepted the invitation to speak at the Al Smith dinner earlier this week, while Biden only confirmed he would give remarks late Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

By comparison, Biden\u2019s speech was personal and more genteel. He steered away from discussing abortion or Barrett\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n

Instead, he discussed how his Catholic faith \u201chelped me through the darkness\u201d \u2014 bringing up his late son, Beau, who died in 2015 of cancer.<\/p>\n

Biden spoke of Catholicism focusing on helping others.<\/p>\n

He chatted about a \u201ckid from Scranton\u201d having an opportunity to meet Pope Francis.<\/p>\n

Biden said America is going through difficult times \u2014 a pandemic, a recession and a racial crisis.<\/p>\n

He, like, Trump, said America will bounce back.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American people don\u2019t give up,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n

The presidential candidates are customarily expected to lightly roast each other \u2014 as well as themselves \u2014 in their speeches for the Catholic Charities event. But neither candidate did so during a grim time.<\/p>\n

It was left to Cardinal Timothy Dolan to provide the entertainment.<\/p>\n

Kicking off the event, Dolan said no one present remembers the 1928 race for president when Smith was the Democratic nominee \u201cexcept for Joe Biden\u201d \u2014 a reference to Biden\u2019s age \u2014 77 .<\/p>\n

Dolan also said \u201cthe Alfred E. Smith Foundation, a charitable, tax-exempt \u2013 President Trump knows what that means\u201d \u2014 a reference to Trump\u2019s personal tax and charitable foundation controversies.<\/p>\n

He also joked about a \u201cpeaceful transition\u201d of the microphone from Biden to Trump \u2014 referencing the president\u2019s constant interruptions at Tuesday\u2019s debate.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee Mr. President, that wasn\u2019t so hard was it?\u201d Dolan said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
