{"id":80364,"date":"2020-10-02T15:47:31","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T12:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/amazon-says-more-than-19000-workers-caught-coronavirus\/"},"modified":"2020-10-02T15:47:31","modified_gmt":"2020-10-02T12:47:31","slug":"amazon-says-more-than-19000-workers-caught-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/amazon-says-more-than-19000-workers-caught-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"#Amazon says more than 19,000 workers caught coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Amazon says more than 19,000 workers caught coronavirus<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/201002-amazon-coronavirus.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n                        More than 19,000 Amazon employees have caught the coronavirus since March, the company said as it revealed the first comprehensive count of infections among its workers.<\/p>\n<p>The e-commerce titan identified 19,816 Amazon and Whole Foods staffers who tested positive for COVID-19 or were presumed to have the bug from March 1 to Sept. 19, Amazon said in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.aboutamazon.com\/operations\/update-on-covid-19-testing\">blog post<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>That number accounts for about 1.44 percent of Amazon\u2019s frontline workforce of more than 1.3 million people. The company contends it would have been 42 percent higher at 33,952 if the infection rate among its employees matched that of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> population.<\/p>\n<p>The revelation followed months of pressure from labor groups and public officials for Amazon to release a complete count of how many employees had contracted and died from the coronavirus. Amazon did not include a tally of deaths in its blog post, but there have reportedly been at least eight fatalities among its workers.<\/p>\n<p>While Amazon initially resisted those calls, it now says other companies should follow its lead and release similar data on infection and quarantine rates, which \u201cwould allow us to benchmark our progress and share best practices across businesses and industries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not an arena where companies should compete \u2014 this is an arena where companies should help one another,\u201d Amazon said.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon has stood by its efforts to protect workers from COVID-19 amid criticism from staffers who said the company was failing to keep them safe as they gr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>led with a surge in online shopping sparked by the pandemic. Before Amazon released an official infection count, workers had reported hundreds of cases through an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/areyousafe.work\/amazon\">online tracking system<\/a> launched by the nonprofit United for Respect.<\/p>\n<p>The Seattle-based giant said it expects to conduct 50,000 coronavirus tests a day at 650 sites by November on top of its efforts to distribute more than 100 million face masks and implement <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>-distancing measures.<\/p>\n<p>But the United Food and Commercial Workers International labor union \u2014 a frequent Amazon critic \u2014 said the massive number of infected workers demands action from federal regulators and a congressional investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon\u2019s confession that nearly 20,000 of its workers have been infected by COVID-19 is the most damning evidence we have seen that corporate America has completely failed to protect our country\u2019s frontline workers in this pandemic,\u201d union president Marc Perrone <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/new-report-amazons-19000-covid-19-infections-exposes-companys-failure-to-keep-workers-safe-on-frontlines-as-pandemic-continues\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Perrone\u2019s statement.
