{"id":80386,"date":"2020-10-02T17:38:54","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T14:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/florida-city-selling-swans-because-of-overpopulation\/"},"modified":"2020-10-02T17:38:54","modified_gmt":"2020-10-02T14:38:54","slug":"florida-city-selling-swans-because-of-overpopulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/florida-city-selling-swans-because-of-overpopulation\/","title":{"rendered":"#Florida city selling swans because of overpopulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Florida city selling swans because of overpopulation<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/lakeland-swan-72.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n                        If you\u2019re looking for a new pet, now\u2019s your chance to get a swan.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Lakeland, Fla., will be selling some of its swans after its annual \u201cSwan Roundup\u201d next week.<\/p>\n<p>According to local reports, the swans have become a bit overpopulated in their home, Lake Morton.<\/p>\n<p>City officials estimate there are about 80 swans on Lake Morton, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/article\/life\/animals\/lakeland-swan-roundup\/67-8d4d81aa-3fcc-4a69-9f3e-81e0a1959b6f\">WTSP reported.<\/a> The city is expecting to sell between 16 and 20 swans to get the flock where it needs to be.<\/p>\n<p>It also doesn\u2019t help that it costs the city about $10,000 a year to feed and care for the swans.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from adjusting the swan population, the roundup is a chance for the swans to get their annual veterinary check-ups so the city\u2019s Parks and Recreation Department can monitor their health, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lakelandgov.net\/news\/posts\/2020\/september-2020\/40th-annual-lake-morton-swan-roundup-october-6th-vet-check-october-7th\/\">according to a press release.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday morning, Lakeland\u2019s Parks Division will be \u201ccarefully gathering the swans\u201d into large holding pens where they\u2019ll wait until their check-ups starting on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will gather the swans on Lake Morton using catch boats with our crews setting up a perimeter around the lake to help keep the swans on the water,\u201d Steve Platt, Lakeland\u2019s Parks and Recreation supervisor, said in a statement. \u201cOur veterinarian will be out the very next morning to assist with keeping our swan flock healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDay two may take a little longer this year because we plan on having a swan sale this year,\u201d Platt added. \u201cWe will have to separate the swans that will be part of that process but we will have more information on our swan sale later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the city, Lakeland\u2019s first swans were donated by Queen Elizabeth in 1957 and by 1980 the population grew so significantly that the city decided to do an annual check-up on the birds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lake Morton swans are a community icon and families have been interacting with the birds for decades,\u201d Bob Donahay, Lakeland\u2019s director of Parks and Recreation, said in a statement. \u201cIt is very important that our Lakeland flock is doing well so we schedule the Swan roundup each year with the primary purpose to check on the health of our birds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople may not realize but the Parks Department actually has a line item in our budget for swan food and upkeep,\u201d Donahay added. \u201cIt costs about $10,000 per year to feed and care for Lakeland\u2019s domestic swans.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For forums sites go to <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/forum.buradabiliyorum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forum.BuradaBiliyorum.Com<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>If you want to read more <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> articles, you can visit our <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">News category.<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/02\/florida-city-selling-swans-because-of-overpopulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Source<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;#Florida city selling swans because of overpopulation&#8221; If you\u2019re looking for a new pet, now\u2019s your chance to get a swan.
