“#Irina Slavina dies after setting herself on fire in Russia<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A Russian journalist died after setting herself on fire outside a government building Friday \u2014 writing on Facebook<\/a> an hour before her suicide, \u201cBlame the Russian Federation for my death.\u201d<\/p>\n

Irina Slavina, editor-in-chief of the small local news<\/a> outlet Koza Press, self-immolated in front of the local branch of the interior ministry in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, about 260 miles east of Moscow.<\/p>\n

About an hour before her death, Slavina penned a foreboding message on Facebook directing followers to blame the Communist nation. A day before, she wrote that police raided her apartment in search of pro-democracy materials.<\/p>\n

Slavina, who ran a press shop that billed itself as having \u201cno censorship\u201d and \u201cno orders \u2018from above,\u2019\u201d said she was being probed for ties to the Open Russia opposition group, which is financed by a fierce critic of the Kremlin, Mikhail Khodorkovsky.<\/p>\n

During the raid, cops swarmed her apartment, hunting for \u201cbrochures, leaflets and accounts\u201d tied to the group and left with her notebooks, laptop and phones, as well as her daughter\u2019s laptop and her husband\u2019s phones, she wrote on Facebook<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m left without the means of production,\u201d she wrote of the event.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s Investigative Committee confirmed it was opening an investigation into a self-immolation, but did not confirm her name in its statement.<\/p>\n

The committee\u2019s local branch in the Nizhny Novgorod region later said Slavina\u2019s self-immolation had nothing to do with the searches carried out at her apartment on the previous day.<\/p>\n

However, supporters of the Russian opposition movement took to social media to say Slavina had been under significant pressure from authorities for years.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the past years security officials have subjected her to endless persecution because of her opposition (activities),\u201d Dmitry Gudkov, an opposition politician, wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a nightmare,\u201d another Kremlin critic, Ilya Yashin, wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of these cases of police amusing themselves, these shows of men in masks \u2014 these are not game<\/a>s. The government is truly breaking people psychologically.\u201d<\/p>\n
