“#NBC’s ‘Connecting’ is a comedy for the pandemic era<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n NBC\u2019s \u201cConnecting\u2026\u201d joins the growing genre of pandemic shows, made by and for the current era of COVID.<\/p>\n

Premiering Thursday (Oct. 8) at 8 p.m. and created by Martin Gero (\u201cBlindspot,\u201d) the ensemble comedy \u2014 filmed in August and September \u2014 follows a group of LA-based friends staying connected via video conferencing as they share each other\u2019s troubles, trade advice and try to navigate the challenges of social<\/a> distancing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very real, and although I\u2019m not exactly my character, it feels very close,\u201d says Otmara Marrero, who plays Annie. \u201cIt\u2019s not like I have to do a lot of the usual internal digging and deep-diving into a character. It feels like we can all be very candid \u2014 in a sense, we\u2019re almost not acting.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to pink-haired Anne, the group includes stressed parent Pradeep (Parvesh Cheena); transgender sports fan Ellis (Shakina Nayfack, \u201cTransparent\u201d); recently-single Ben (comedian Preacher Lawson); paranoid conspiracy theorist Rufus (Ely Henry); and cheerful married couple Michelle and Garret (Jill Knox and Keith Powell).<\/p>\n

\u201cConnecting\u2026\u201d joins script<\/a>ed shows such as Apple\u2019s \u201cMythic Quest\u201d and Freeform\u2019s \u201cLove in the Time of Corona\u201d that have experimented with similar formats.<\/p>\n

Annie\u2019s main plot is a love story; she has a crush on Ben, and is trying to figure out how to ask him to move in with her so they can quarantine together.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The show is] all about that friend group, their highs and lows, but there\u2019s definitely that love story at the core of it with one of her best friends, Ben,\u201d says Marrero. \u201cIt\u2019s that friend where you always cross the line a little bit, teetering between friend and romantic love, and he kind of always misses the hint and gets in [another] relationship. She\u2019s not waiting around for him, but she happens to be available every time he is.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show was filmed in each cast member\u2019s house, creating an unusual situation with Otmara acting as her own crew.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did everything ourselves,\u201d she says. \u201cI actually haven\u2019t met any of my castmates or my directors or creators. We\u2019ve all done this remotely. They sent us a lot of gear and boxes and set decorations, computers, iPads, trip<\/a>ods, lighting. We did [our own] hair, makeup, lighting, setting up shots, moving things around in the house, decorating, props. It\u2019s a lot to think about.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like acting is an afterthought \u2014 which is very weird because that\u2019s always at the forefront for an actor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marrero will soon meer her castmates in person for the first time at a socially distanced celebration of the show\u2019s premiere.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re having a little screening at a drive-in, a cast and crew thing, and we are all going to go to one of our castmate\u2019s houses,\u201d she says. \u201cThey have a really big backyard so we\u2019ll do a little socially distanced hang for the first time ever. I\u2019m so excited because I know them, we\u2019re on a group chat\u2026But there\u2019s nothing like that real-life camaraderie and connection and listening to a person laugh or talk or the small nuances of a real-life human\u2026 that you don\u2019t completely get on the Internet.\u201d<\/span>\n <\/div>\n
