\n Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said politics won\u2019t influence his company\u2019s push to produce a coronavirus vaccine after President Trump claimed a shot could be ready in weeks.<\/p>\n

In an open letter<\/a> to Pfizer employees, Bourla said the New York-based drugmaker is moving at \u201cthe speed of science<\/a>\u201d to develop a vaccine but expressed concern that \u201camplified political rhetoric\u201d was undermining public confidence in the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would never succumb to political pressure,\u201d Bourla wrote in the Thursday note. \u201cThe only pressure we feel \u2014 and it weighs heavy \u2014 are the billions of people, millions of businesses and hundreds of government officials that are depending on us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bourla\u2019s statement came two days after Trump name-checked Pfizer during Tuesday\u2019s presidential debate as he argued the nation was \u201cweeks away from a vaccine\u201d \u2014 a claim that doesn\u2019t jive with drugmakers\u2019 own statements.<\/p>\n

Asked whether top health officials in his administration were wrong to say a vaccine wouldn\u2019t be widely available until next summer, Trump asserted<\/a> that \u201cwe can have it a lot sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a very political thing,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve spoken to Pfizer, I\u2019ve spoken to all of the people that you have to speak to, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and others. They can go faster than that by a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bourla has said that Pfizer may know by the end of October whether the vaccine it\u2019s developing with German firm BioNTech works. Moderna, however, doesn\u2019t expect sufficient results from its late-stage clinical trial until November, and Johnson & Johnson just started its Phase 3 study last week.<\/p>\n

Bourla said he can\u2019t make any guarantees about the timeline as Pfizer\u2019s vaccine goes through its own Phase 3 trial because the US Food and Drug Administration will have to app<\/a>rove it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t predict exactly when, or even if our vaccine will be approved by the FDA for distribution to the public,\u201d Bourla wrote. \u201cBut I do know that the world will be safer if we stop talking about the vaccines\u2019 delivery in political terms and focus instead on a rigorous independent scientific evaluation and a robust independent approval process.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pfizer and eight other companies working on COVID-19 vaccines also issued a statement last month pledging to make safety their top priority and follow \u201chigh ethical standards and sound scientific principles.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
