“#’SNL’ makes an uncomfortable and lackluster return<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Anybody who thought \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d might choose sensitivity in the wake of President Trump being diagnosed with COVID-19 was proven wrong immedia<\/a>tely during the show\u2019s uncomfortable Season 46 premiere.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe following is a rebroadcast of Tuesday\u2019s presidential debate,\u201d said a narrator during the cold open. \u201cEven though Tuesday feels like 100 years ago. Because it might be the only presidential debate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Was the awkwardness of sending up a 74-year-old man who is hospitalized with a deadly new virus worth it? Hardly.<\/p>\n

While it was a happ<\/a>y relief to see \u201cSNL\u201d back in the famed Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center with a real, laughing audience, this was one of the show\u2019s worst presidential debate sketches in years \u2014 bringing to mind to the lame Mitt Romney bits no one can quote now.<\/p>\n

As Trump, Alec Baldwin returned yet again to do his predictable mugging, so-so impression and landing no punchlines. The actor lacked energy. But the headline grabber was that Jim Carrey signed on to play Joe Biden. With the help of hairline-altering makeup, Carrey nailed the physicality and voice of the former vice president, but the script didn\u2019t latch onto any of the Biden traits voters are all too familiar with.<\/p>\n

Where was Creepy Uncle Joe? What happened to the Joe who mixes up words like a Shakespearean clown? Carrey wore \u201cTop Gun\u201d sunglasses and tried to make the guy as cool as Danny Zuko. Huh? We know \u201cSNL\u201d wants Biden to win, but that doesn\u2019t mean his lines can\u2019t still be biting and hilarious.<\/p>\n

Kicking off the debate, Carrey said: \u201cI\u2019m holdin\u2019 my bladder, let\u2019s get at her.\u201d Not funny. Later he paused Trump with a remote control and said it was nice \u201cjust not to hear his voice for a single G\u2013damned second.\u201d Bombed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d is usually at its best and most relevant during election cycles, and its debate sketches are the stuff of legend. Remember Jon Lovitz\u2019s diminutive Michael Dukakis saying, \u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m losin\u2019 to this guy!\u201d to Dana Carvey\u2019s George H.W. Bush? Or when Darrell Hammond as an Eeyore-like Al Gore rambled on about his strategy of hiding national secrets in a private \u201clockbox\u201d? Those skits helped define how Americans came to see these politicians. They were that good.<\/p>\n

However, despite the edginess of ignoring that the commander in chief is currently working from a bed in Walter Reed, Saturday\u2019s eye-roll-worthy material was wearing a safety mask. Even the excellent Maya Rudolph couldn\u2019t pump things up. She came on for a moment as Kamala Harris to say some T-shirt ready slogans: \u201cLet Mama-la go to work\u201d and \u201cIf there is one thing we learned tonight, it\u2019s that America needs a WAP: Woman As President.\u201d With Washington, DC, overflowing with gigantic characters, sanitized zingers are the best we can do?<\/p>\n

OK, let\u2019s forget the bland beginning. Time for a palate cleanser, right? Wrong. Host Chris Rock\u2019s monologue\u2019s was dumb, too. \u201cPresident Trump\u2019s in the hospital with COVID,\u201d Rock said. \u201cAnd I just want to say my heart goes out to COVID.\u201d Yuck.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
