\n Fox News<\/a>\u2019 anchor Chris Wallace and an adviser to the Trump reelection campaign got into a tense exchange Sunday over the president\u2019s family sitting in the first row at Tuesday\u2019s presidential debate without wearing masks.<\/p>\n

Wallace, who moderated the debate in Cleveland that turned into a free-wheeling 90 minutes of insults and interruptions between President Trump and Joe Biden, asked Steve Cortes why Trump\u2019s family flouted the rules set up by the Cleveland Clinic \u2014 to which Cortes replied that they had already been tested for COVID-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo they think that the health and safety rules for everybody else do not app<\/a>ly to them?\u201d he questioned on \u201cFox News Sunday.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody was tested before that event, as you well know,\u201d Cortes replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter. Everybody that was in that room was tested and the Cleveland Clinic\u2019s regulation was that it didn\u2019t matter,\u201d said Wallace, adding that only he, the president and Biden were exempt from the mask-wearing regulations.<\/p>\n

Trump is receiving treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after he and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for the coronavirus on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee, has tested negative.<\/p>\n

Wallace pointed out images showing the Trump family \u2014 Eric, Donald Jr., Ivanka, Tiffany and the first lady \u2014 not wearing facial coverings, along with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.<\/p>\n

He added that officials from the Cleveland Clinic approached the family and offered to give them masks, but were waved away.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo forget this question of being tested beforehand. Everybody was tested beforehand. That \u2014 no, I\u2019m going to finish my question \u2014 everybody was told to wear a mask, why did the first family and the chief of staff feel that the rules for everybody else didn\u2019t apply to them?\u201d Wallace pressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cChris, we believe the masks are very useful. The president has worn them on many occasions,\u201d Cortes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also believe in some element of individual choice. People were distanced, and they had been tested, both of those things were true,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But Wallace immedia<\/a>tely shot back.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey weren\u2019t distanced and there were rules and there was no freedom of choice. They broke the rules, why did they break the rules?\u201d the Fox News host pressed.<\/p>\n

After a few more moments of back-and-forth between the two, Cortes brought up Wallace\u2019s moderating duties at the debate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way you\u2019re starting to harangue me now actually reminds me of what you did to the president. He had to debate not just Joe Biden but you as well. You were not a neutral moderator then,\u201d Cortes said before going on to call Wallace the \u201ceffective opposition to the president.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople can make reasonable decisions for themselves,\u201d Cortes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, actually they can\u2019t, they\u2019re the rules and they\u2019ll be kicked out next time,\u201d Wallace countered. \u201cThe president interrupted me and the vice president 145 times, so I object to saying I harangued the president, I know it\u2019s the talking point.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
