\n Among the many things City Hall needs to rethink now that the\u00a0pandemic has blown a vast hole in the budget is the mayor\u2019s plan to build a whole new set of homeless shelters.<\/p>\n

Notably,\u00a0the city\u2019s emergency program to move so many from shelters to hotels<\/a> (to reduce COVID-19 spread)\u00a0skyrocketed in cost from\u00a0$78 million to $299 million. A federal grant will cover most of that, but it\u2019s a sign of how readily homeless spending can explode.<\/p>\n

And the big public pushback against the\u00a0hotel-shelters<\/a> shows how neighborhoods erupt in fury when certain homeless populations are dumped in their midst.<\/p>\n

All of which argues for dropping Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s plan to open 90 new homeless shelters. It\u2019s too expensive \u2014 and too likely to enflame the target \u2019hoods at a time when no one needs more reasons to move away.<\/p>\n

Homeless czar Steve Banks, who has managed to more than double the Homeless Services budget, needs to start focusing on what\u2019s cost-effective in post-pandemic Gotham.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
