“#Black pastor arrested after calling cops on white \u2018mob\u2019 threatening to kill him<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A Virginia sheriff has apologized to a black pastor who was arrested for pulling a gun on a group of white neighbors as they allegedly assaulted and threatened to kill him.<\/p>\n

Pastor Leon McCray, 61, told his congregation that he was surrounded by a \u201cmob\u201d of five \u201cirate\u201d people who attacked him \u201cverbally and physically\u201d after he stopped them dumping a refrigerator on his property in Edinburg.<\/p>\n

The group was \u201cthreatening my life,\u201d he said during a sermon at his Lighthouse Church & Marketplace Ministries International \u2014 claiming they also told him, \u201cBlack lives don\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing threatened and fearing for my life, I took and felt compelled to pull my concealed weapon \u2014 my legally concealed weapon \u2014 to save my life,\u201d he told congregants in the June 7 sermon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis act, through the grace of God, saved my life,\u201d he insisted, saying it bought him time to dial 911 and beg for help.<\/p>\n

But the responding officers \u201cmade a beeline\u201d for him instead, arresting him even as the group continued making threats against him, he claimed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hate-crime assaulting criminals watched me being handcuffed and carted off like a dog while the deputies stood with them,\u201d he told his congregants, saying he was charged with brandishing a weapon despite his \u201cSecond Amendment rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was indeed the most humiliating, dehumanizing, demeaning and violating event of my life,\u201d he said, calling it \u201ca day that changed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt, literally, like I had been lynched, without being killed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The group also allegedly hurled racial slurs at the pastor, telling him, \u201cWe will kill you,\u201d he told WHSV.<\/p>\n

Five days after the sermon, Shenandoah County Sheriff Timothy Carter announced that the charge against the pastor had been dropped \u2014 and that hate-crime charges were being filed against his alleged attackers. He also placed two supervisors on unpaid administrative leave during a review of the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have apologized to Mr. McCray,\u201d Carter said, conceding that the \u201ccharge of brandishing was certainly not app<\/a>ropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, as I told Mr. McCray, if I were faced with similar circumstances, I would have probably done the same thing,\u201d the sheriff said of the pastor defending himself.<\/p>\n

He also announced warrants for \u201cmore severe charges\u201d against the alleged attackers, who are being held without bond.<\/p>\n

Donny Salyers, 43, Dennis Salyers, 26, Farrah Salyers, 42, Amanda Salyers, 26, and Christopher Sharp, 57, are all facing charges for hate crimes and various degrees of assault.<\/p>\n

Both Donny and Dennis Salyers are also charged with assault and battery, while Sharp and Amanda Salyers are charged with trespassing.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
