\n It app<\/a>ears that ESPN\u2019s \u201cLong Gone Summer\u201d 30 for 30 documentary, which chronicled the famous 1998 home run chase between Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire, was a swing and miss for some.<\/p>\n

While people are starved for baseball as MLB and the players association continue to struggle to find common ground amid contract negotiations that are delaying the start of the 2020 season, many tuned in to get their baseball fix.<\/p>\n

But several viewers took issue with the lack of variety, lack of depth and lack of discussion of the most controversial part of Sosa and McGwire\u2019s careers: Steroids.<\/p>\n

A repeated critique of the documentary was how it was produced: stringing together home-run highlight after home-run highlight without much diversity. Many considered it to just be \u201c2 hours of home run clips,\u201d which was \u201cboring.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLong Gone Summer\u201d is a lukewarm nostalgia trip<\/a> with weird edits and no real insight. It saves its best threads for the final 15 minutes, which is too late for recovery.<\/p>\n

Not sure they can salvage anything in the last 15 minutes, but this was the weirdest and worst 30 for 30 out of all the ones I’ve watched. 2 hours of home run clips & pretending like they weren’t tainted. So bizarre.<\/p>\n

Other viewers felt like they didn\u2019t learn anything new from the documentary, either. There were even some complaints that there wasn\u2019t enough of Sosa in the documentary.<\/p>\n

Alright I\u2019m trying not to be negative\u2026but this documentary sucks. It\u2019s literally just highlights of home runs. They haven\u2019t talking about one thing of substance<\/p>\n

Long Gone Summer- I love me some 30 for 30 and this didn’t disappoint. It touches on the dark side and that’s appropriate but it’s more about capturing a moment of Americana where we are united and cheering. I love that. idk how to feel bout this long gone summer doc man swear it could\u2019ve been a biography of mcguwire lol sosa had like three clips in it and it was all happy derky wanted more backstory on the whole steroid shiiiit<\/p>\n

But baseball fans were evidently most distraught over ESPN\u2019s blatant decision to stay away from the hard questions. McGwire admitted to using steroids in 2010 and repeats similar talking points today, claiming they helped him with recovery. Sosa has never explicitly admitted to taking performance-enhancing drugs, but was among those who tested positive in the anonymous 2003 survey that was later outed by the New York Times.<\/p>\n

Many considered the lack of steroid talk to be a gaping hole in the documentary, which many watched to learn more about specifically. It wasn\u2019t until the final 15 minutes of the doc that there was any sort of attempt to address \u201cthe elephant in the room.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For someone who has just gotten into baseball in the last couple seasons, I thought Long Gone Summer did a great job of sharing a story that help make baseball what it is today, but failed poorly at addressing the elephant in the room which was PEDs till the last few minutes.<\/p>\n
