And then we\u2019re going to release them out into the wild,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/108878629136279\/videos\/4308065169220383\/\">the \u201cThor\u201d actor explained<\/a> to a 7<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> Sydney correspondent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 100 years, we are going to be looking back at this day as the day that set in motion the ecological restoration of an entire country,\u201d Tim Faulkner, president of the environmental nonprofit, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aussieark.org.au\/devilcomeback\/\">said in a statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Australian mainland was once home to the Tasmanian devil, before predators such as the dingo and humans all but eliminated the feisty creature. Relegated to the Tasmanian island for thousands of years, the species suffered another setback: a transmissible cancer called devil facial tumor disease (DFTD). In captivity, they\u2019ve been able to multiply their observation group from 44 devils in 2011 to more than 200 now. Recently, their team has freed a total of 26 individuals into Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only is this the reintroduction of one of Australia\u2019s beloved animals, but of an animal that will engineer the entire environment around it, restoring and rebalancing our forest ecology after centuries of devastation from introduced foxes and cats and other invasive predators,\u201d Faulkner said.<\/p>\n<p>Don Church, president of the Global Wildlife Conservation charity, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aussieark.org.au\/devilcomeback\/\">called the effort<\/a> \u201can incredible example of how to re-wild our planet, bringing back the natural systems to the benefit of all life on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16400653\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img class=\" size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped wp-image-16400653 lazyload\" alt=\"Tasmanian Devil infant\" width=\"662\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/tasmanian-devils-10.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/tasmanian-devils-10.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/tasmanian-devils-10.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/tasmanian-devils-10.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=662 662w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/tasmanian-devils-10.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1324 1324w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 662px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"credit\">Aussie Ark\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Aussie Ark hopes to reintroduce around 40 more devils in the near future, and will track their rehoming process using radio collars, trap surveillance and regular surveys of the region.<\/p>\n<p>In their native habitat, the apex predator is sure to help curb Australia\u2019s populations of feral cats and hungry foxes, which are known to hunt other endangered species, including the bandicoot. Meanwhile, more bandicoots means better management of their nests, made from dry leaves and grass, which cause wildfires to spread even faster.
