\n Louisiana school officials are facing a lawsuit for\u00a0accusing a fourth grader of flashing a \u201cfull-sized rifle\u201d during his virtual class and suspending him \u2014 when the weapon was really a BB gun.<\/p>\n

The parents of Ka\u2019Mauri Harrison filed suit against the Jefferson Parish School Board on Friday after the boy was booted from Woodmere Elementary School for six days last month, CNN reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 9-year-old was taking a test on Sept. 11 with his computer on mute when his brother walked into the room and trip<\/a>ped over the BB gun that was lying on the floor, according to a school behavioral report.<\/p>\n

Ka\u2019Mauri then left his seat, out of view of the teacher, and came back with \u201cwhat app<\/a>eared to be a full-sized rifle in his possession,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n

The teacher tried to talk to Ka\u2019Mauri, but his computer was muted and he was kicked out of the virtual class.<\/p>\n

His parents told school officials that it was a BB gun, not a rifle.<\/p>\n

But a school board hearing Sept. 22 found him \u201cguilty of displaying a facsimile weapon while receiving virtual instruction,\u201d the suit says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are treating it as if he brought a weapon to school,\u201d said the boy\u2019s dad Nyron Harrison.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0family is seeking at least $50,000 in damages for \u201cmental pain, suffering, anguish and embarrassment, humiliation and loss of self-esteem, future counseling and tutoring and lost income,\u201d according to the suit.<\/p>\n

The school district declined to comment, citing a policy of not speaking about individual student records, CNN reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegarding discipline, it is our policy that teachers and administrators may employ reasonable disciplinary and corrective measures to maintain order,\u201d the district said.<\/p>\n
