“#Kim Delaney Previews Her Mysterious New ‘General<\/a> Hospital’ Character<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Kim Delaney<\/a> is an Emmy winner for her role as Det. Diane Russell on NYPD Blue<\/em> and has been a cast member of many other memorable programs including Army Wives<\/em>, Chicago Fire<\/em>, CSI: Miami<\/em>, The O.C.<\/em>, and she even headlined her own series<\/a> \u2014 Philly \u2014<\/em>\u00a0in 2001-02. But she\u2019ll always be known and loved for her first TV role \u2013 Jenny Gardner Nelson on All My Children<\/em>. Now, she\u2019s coming back to soaps and will make her debut on General Hospital<\/em><\/a> on Tuesday, October 5.<\/p>\n

As soap fans may recall, Delaney\u2019s tenure in Pine Valley from 1981-84 coincided with a golden age of storytelling for the show. Ingenue Jenny and boy-next-door Greg (Laurence Lau) were star-crossed lovers who were kept apart by all sorts of maleficent forces including Liza Colby (Marcy Walker), who wanted Greg for herself, Greg\u2019s busybody mother Enid (Natalie Ross), and Jenny\u2019s obsessed boyfriend Tony Barclay (Brent Barrett).<\/p>\n

Greg and Jenny finally made it to the altar, but their honeymoon \u2013 and her life \u2013 were tragically cut short after Jenny boarded a jet ski that Tony had rigged to explode, hoping to kill Greg, but Jenny was the casualty. GH <\/em>is keeping it under wraps as to whom Delaney is playing, but TV Insider did chat with the actress about how her return to soap operas came about. Read on to get the scoop!<\/p>\n

I guess it\u2019d be too much to hope for your first GH <\/em>scene to be you in a hospital bed with two doctors standing over you with one saying, \u2018This woman\u2019s been in a coma for over 36 years ever since that jet ski explosion!\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Kim Delaney:<\/strong> Oh, my God! Could you imagine? That\u2019s actually a very cool idea. That\u2019s a very good idea.<\/p>\n

There are very few on-screen deaths that leave the impression that Jenny\u2019s did. College students altered their class schedules around when soaps would air. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. Musicians, too. They\u2019d wake up and then throw on their TVs and watch All My Children<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What are your memories of that time? Plenty of soaps do the poor girl\/rich boy story as AMC<\/em> did with Jenny and Greg (Lawrence Lau), but yours was special due in no small part to the casting and storytelling. <\/strong><\/p>\n

I had the best time when I was on that show, playing Jenny. I think I knew that it was special but I wasn\u2019t fully quite aware of the magnitude. I remember Carol Burnett (an AMC<\/em> super-fan who recurred on the show as Verla Grubbs) took six of us out to dinner to this beautiful restaurant in New York. She said, \u2018Guys, you have to know how special [this show] is. You may not fully know it for 20 years, but it is.\u2019 We just had so much fun doing it. Steven Bochco said something similar to me on my first week of NYPD Blue<\/em>. And because of my time on AMC, I was able to say to him, \u2018Yeah, I know.\u2019<\/p>\n

When Diane\u2019s husband Bobby (Jimmy Smits) was on his deathbed, it was like, \u2018Well, now Kim knows how Greg felt when Jenny died.\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s funny. Well, not funny<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n

How did you coming to GH <\/em>come about? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Frank Valentini [executive producer] reached out. He got in touch with me. We had some conversations and he sold me on it. He started talking about where he was going to take this character and I said, \u2018Let\u2019s go!\u2019<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s taping schedule must make the one you had at AMC<\/em> seem leisurely. <\/strong><\/p>\n

I remember on AMC<\/em> that each day we\u2019d first work with the director. Then, we\u2019d do dry-blocking and then, we\u2019d have lunch. After lunch, there was dress rehearsal and then, we\u2019d shoot.<\/p>\n

How are you adjusting to how quickly the show tapes now? <\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m doing okay with it. It\u2019s all good. It\u2019s just a different way of taping.<\/p>\n

You returned to All My Children<\/em> in 1994 for some guest spots after Tad went to heaven and encountered deceased loved ones \u2013 this was long before it became \u2018cool\u2019 to do a cameo on a soap after moving on from daytime.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. I came back as an angel. They reached out and I said, \u2018Absolutely. Whatever you want.\u2019<\/p>\n

No hesitations?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

None. Work is work. And AMC<\/em> was so great for me. It was a very special time in my life. When I left, it was because I wanted to try other things. That was the only reason I didn\u2019t stay.<\/p>\n
