\n \u201cGone with the Wind\u201d is coming back.<\/p>\n

HBO Max will again start streaming the controversial slavery-era movie \u2014 with a lecture about the racial themes that first got it pulled, according to the scholar providing the intro.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will provide an introduction placing the film in its multiple historical contexts,\u201d cinema professor Jacqueline Stewart wrote in an op-ed for CNN, confirming the movie\u2019s return to the streaming service.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, this is an opportunity to think about what classic films can teach us,\u201d insisted Stewart, a 50-year-old host on Turner Classic Movies<\/a> (TCM).<\/p>\n

She did not announce a date for its return, and HBO Max did not immedia<\/a>tely return calls for comment.<\/p>\n

The movie \u2014 starring Vivienne Leigh, Clark Gable and Hattie McDaniel \u2014 was pulled by HBO last week following an op-ed by \u201c12 Years a Slave\u201d screenwriter John Ridley who said it romanticized \u201cthe horrors of slavery.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her own op-ed, Stewart called it one of a number of old movies that \u201chave played a major role in perpetuating the racist beliefs that devalue Black lives and normalize the use of excessive force against Black people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe film romanticizes slavery as a benign and benevolent institution,\u201d she wrote, noting it is \u201cstill the highest-grossing film in history when adjusted for inflation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stewart conceded that seeing the movie \u201cso prominently in HBO Max\u2019s launch felt like salt rubbed into wounds that have never been permitted to heal\u201d amid \u201cevery act of anti-black violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it is precisely because of the ongoing, painful patterns of racial injustice and disregard for black lives that \u2018Gone with the Wind\u2019 should stay in circulation and remain available for viewing, analysis and discussion,\u201d she insisted.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Gone with the Wind\u2019 is a prime text for examining expressions of white supremacy in popular culture,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, people are turning to movies for racial re-education,\u201d Stewart said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf people are really doing their homework, we may be poised to have our most informed, honest and productive national conversations yet about black lives on screen and off.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
