The bad news<\/a> for movie theaters in 2020 continues as\u00a0Dune<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Denis Villeneueve<\/strong>\u2018s star-studded sci-fi epic, vacates its December 2020 release date and moves to October of next year.\u00a0Dune<\/em> joins an ever-growing number of big movies<\/a> that have been pushed into next year due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis. For now, Warner Bros. will hang their 2020 winter box office hopes on\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984<\/em>, which is still set to open on December 25. But, as we all know by now, that could change.<\/p>\n

Collider<\/a> has the scoop on the new\u00a0Dune<\/em> release date: October 1, 2021<\/strong>. The release date change comes on the heels of the announcement that MGM pushed No Time to Die<\/em> into April 2021, which seemed to set off a chain reaction that caused theater owner\u00a0Cineworld to announce it would be closing its Regal Cinemas locations in America for the foreseeable future. It\u2019s worth noting, however, that Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis<\/a> has said that Warner Bros. hasn\u2019t confirmed the Dune\u00a0<\/em>move yet.
\nDune<\/em>\u2018s potential move to 2021 is just the latest blow to the struggling movie theater industry, and it begs the question: are\u00a0any<\/em> big 2020 movies going to actually open on time at this point?\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984<\/em>, another big Warner Bros. property, is currently set for December 25, but with\u00a0Dune<\/em> moving it seems like a\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984\u00a0<\/em>delay is all but guaranteed.<\/p>\n

As far as big 2020 movies go, Disney is still hoping to release the Pixar movie\u00a0Soul<\/em> into theaters in November, and the Ryan Reynolds comedy\u00a0Free Guy<\/em> is holding onto its December 11 date after moving out of July. Will they move next? It certainly seems likely. Then there\u2019s the future to consider. October 1, 2021 is\u00a0also<\/em> supposed to be the release date for\u00a0The Batman<\/em>. It seems highly unlikely that Warner Bros. is going to open two major movies on the same date like that, so you can probably expect\u00a0The Batman<\/em> to announce a new release date soon.<\/p>\n

Dune<\/em> stars\u00a0Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong>, Rebecca Ferguson<\/strong>, Oscar Isaac<\/strong>, Josh Brolin<\/strong>, Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong>, Dave Bautist<\/strong>a, Stephen McKinley Henderson<\/strong>, Zendaya<\/strong>, David Dastmalchian<\/strong>, Chang Chen<\/strong>, Sharon Duncan-Brewster<\/strong>, Charlotte Rampling<\/strong>, Jason Momoa<\/strong>, and Javier Bardem<\/strong>, and is described as a \u201cmythic and emotionally charged hero\u2019s journey\u201d that \u201ctells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel<\/a> to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people.
