\n US stocks sank Monday as growing fears about a\u00a0second wave of the coronavirus\u00a0rattled Wall Street.<\/p>\n

The Dow Jones industrial average tumbled 762.34 points, or 2.9 percent, to 24,843.20 in early trading after several US states reported spikes in COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations. The S&P 500 index\u00a0dropped as much as 2.4 percent, while the Nasdaq posted an early loss as large as 1.9 percent.<\/p>\n

The drops put Wall Street on pace to continue last week\u2019s losses amid concerns about new cases of the virus in the US and abroad, which could jeopardize the economic reopening that had helped fuel the market\u2019s recent rally.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe secondary virus outbreak that app<\/a>ears to be dotting the global landscape is frightening the bejeebers out of investors around the world today,\u201d said Stephen Innes, chief global market strategist at AxiCorp.<\/p>\n

Nine US states have seen record numbers of new coronavirus cases in recent days and four hit new highs for hospitalizations on Saturday. Dozens of new cases have also emerged since late last week in Beijing, which went almost two months without any reported infections.<\/p>\n

The virus fears have taken the steam out of the market\u2019s rapid rally since March, fueled by optimism about the economic recovery from the pandemic, as well as aggressive stimulus efforts from central banks. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite hit an all-time high last week before a\u00a0Thursday selloff\u00a0that marked Wall Street\u2019s worst day since mid-March.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow deep this correction could run, is entirely dependent on the evolution of primary and secondary COVID-19 outbreaks around the world,\u201d OANDA senior currency analyst Jeffrey Halley said in a\u00a0commentary.<\/p>\n

Wall Street followed international markets lower on Monday. Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng index finished down 2.1 percent, while the Nikkei 225 in Japan closed 3.4 percent lower.\u00a0London\u2019s FTSE 100 was off 1.2 percent as of 10:08 a.m.<\/p>\n
