Adams did his fair share of research to prepare for his starring role as John Glenn in \u201cThe Right Stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he already had a head-start on Glenn and his fellow Mercury 7 astronauts, whose complicated, competitive \u2014 and, at times, antagonistic \u2014 relationships with each other are laid bare in the Disney+ <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, adapted from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Right-Stuff-Tom-Wolfe\/dp\/0312427565?tag=nypost-20\">Tom Wolfe\u2019s bestseller<\/a> and the 1983 big-screen movie (starring Ed Harris as Glenn).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was lucky in that I was very familiar with the source material,\u201d says Adams, 39, who filmed \u201cThe Right Stuff\u201d premiere while wr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing up \u201cSuits\u201d on USA. \u201cI think, in a lot of ways, [\u2018The Right Stuff\u2019] was the first book I consciously fell in love with. My father is a journalist and a big fan of Tom Wolfe; he gave me the book when I was around 14 or 15 and I just devoured it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really fed my fascination with the space program, test pilots, aviation \u2014 the whole thing,\u201d he says. \u201cI dove in head-first and never stopped swimming in that pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The eight-episode series, premiering Friday, offers a gritty, unvarnished look at Glenn, Alan Shepard, Gordon Cooper, Gus Grissom, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra and Deke Slayton \u2014 the first astronauts chosen by NASA for \u201cProject Mercury,\u201d America\u2019s \u201cspace race\u201d answer to Russia during the Cold War. Adams<\/span><span class=\"credit\">National Geographic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The seven men were the creme de la creme of America\u2019s jet pilots: whip-smart, supremely confident, fearless and swaggering, with egos to match their extraordinary abilities and All-American images fed to an adoring public. \u201cIt was part of the deal in order to keep the attention of the American people and keep the [Congressional] funding flowing,\u201d Adams says. \u201cIt was not a time where we saw people in a warts-and-all kind of way. They had to have a very particular version of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But behind the bravado they were also human, with everyday frailties including broken marriages, infidelity, petty jealousies and insecurities \u2014 all laid bare in \u201cThe Right Stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese were immensely complicated guys,\u201d Adams says. \u201cTheir relationships [with each other] were fractured and there was a lot of manipulation and competition on who was going to be first [in space], particularly between Glenn and Shepard, who had completely different ways of living their lives and were very different personalities. Adams, Colin O\u2019Donoghue and James Lafferty.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">National Geographic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Glenn was already a semi-celebrity, having appeared on a 1957 episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> show \u201cName That Tune\u201d on CBS. He was extremely shrewd and image-conscious vis a vis the press, which helped build his Mercury 7 mythology but didn\u2019t sit particularly well with his fellow astronauts \u2014 or his bosses at NASA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the very early stage he understood that being at the top of that food chain in terms of media and culture was going to be a huge part of this,\u201d Adams says. \u201cHe was very savvy in that sense, sometimes to his detriment, because it separated him from the group. He wasn\u2019t just a fighter pilot getting this opportunity based solely on his skill, which was enormous, but it was also his maneuvering, his <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> climbing and cozying up to the president and being very close to the Kennedys \u2026 he saw an opportunity and took it, which created a bit of conflict for him and these other guys who just considered themselves good-old-boy jet fighter pilots.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16403799\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img class=\"size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped wp-image-16403799 lazyload\" alt=\"John Glenn played by Patrick J. He was known as \u2018The Boy Scout,\u2019 the evolved astronaut \u2026 but when you got down to it, he was the most disliked among the [Mercury 7] group and the higher-ups at NASA. He was a bit of an oddball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams read biographies of Glenn, but says he learned even more about him by reading the other Mercury 7 astronauts\u2019 biographies and accounts, including \u201cLight this Candle\u201d (about Alan Shepard).<\/p>\n<p>He also spent time at the John Glenn Archives at Ohio State University. \u201cIt\u2019s filled with ephemera, journals, private stuff, not what he was presenting to the world but how he was talking to people in private and communicating with his wife,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s about who he was in the quiet moments, behind closed doors when the cameras were off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat, for me, brought him to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16403820\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img class=\"size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped wp-image-16403820 lazyload\" alt=\"John Glenn played by Patrick J.
