\n A few months ago, Facebook began labeling posts by state-controlled media \u2014 a move it had announced a year ago. Now the company is bringing a similar warning to Instagram, as spotted by journalist Casey Michel<\/a>.<\/p>\n
\n

Instagram has begun rolling out new \u201cstate-controlled media\u201d labels\u2014here are the ones for Kremlin outlets aimed at younger Americans: pic.twitter.com\/vyUySA1zbW<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of these accounts, including Redfish<\/em> and In the Now<\/em>, have hundreds of thousands of followers.<\/p>\n

The label app<\/a>ears quite prominently on the accounts\u2019 profiles, as well as every single post \u2014 right under the account name. As you can see above, some of these outlets have already begun reacting to the label within their bios.<\/p>\n

If you click on the warning label, you will see a pop up that tells you \u201cInstagram believes this publisher may be wholly or partially under the editorial control of a state.\u201d Click on a \u2018learn more\u2019 link takes you to a page<\/a> in which Instagram goes into much more detail:<\/p>\n

Instagram seeks to identify these organizations by using our definition and standards to review the available information about their ownership, governance, sources of funding, and processes that may help to ensure editorial independence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The company also notes:<\/p>\n

We do not consider public media organizations that are publicly financed, retain a public service mission, and demonstrate independent editorial control to be state-controlled media under our definition and will not apply the label to these organizations at this time.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The page explains some of the criteria Instagram uses to identify state-controlled accounts, such as ownership structures and editorial guidelines. Pages that believe they have been wrongfully labeled can appeal the decision.<\/p>\n

Facebook says it plans to incorporate the labels to ads in the months to come as well. Considering the US election is coming up, fighting disinformation is crucial, even if that\u2019s through Instagram posts meant to push the public in one direction or the other.<\/p>\n
