\n A woman in the UK was in for a quacking good surprise when she embarked on a science<\/a> experiment with a half-carton of duck eggs.<\/p>\n

When the coronavirus forced Charli Lello into furlough, the bored 29-year-old former retail manager found herself in the market for a new pastime. Like many others with time on their hands, she decided to get herself a pet \u2014 or, in this case, hatch three ducks named Beep, Peep and Meep.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got the idea from a video that popped up on my Facebook<\/a> feed of someone hatching quail eggs,\u201d Lello, from Hertfordshire, in the north of London, tells CNN. So, the next time she went to Waitrose, a UK-based supermarket chain, she picked up both quail and duck eggs.<\/p>\n

\u201cMum and I had briefly spoken about getting some ducks after lockdown anyway,\u201d says Lello, who kept chickens already.<\/p>\n

Lello says she didn\u2019t expect the stunt to work \u2014 and, for the quail eggs, she was correct.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of the quail eggs developed but after 6 days in the incubator I checked the duck eggs and could see veins and a very tiny wiggly embryo,\u201d she says. \u201cThen, the excitement kicked in.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the help of her friends who she said \u201chelped keep [her] calm,\u201d Lello waited by her incubator with bated breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spent the whole two days that Beep was hatching glued to my incubator,\u201d she says. \u201cHe was a lone chick for two days so I had to make a little sling out of a beanie hat and carry him around until Peep hatched. Meep joined a week later.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Waitrose told CNN in a statement that it is \u201crare\u201d to find fertilized eggs on their store shelves.<\/p>\n

The supermarket explained that because it is \u201cnotoriously difficult to identify the sex of egg-laying, white-feathered ducks,\u201d male ducks are sometimes accidentally housed with females. Alternatively, wild female ducks may occasionally escape into the male duck pen.<\/p>\n

They add that fertilized eggs are \u201centirely indistinguishable from normal eggs\u201d on the breakfast plate.<\/p>\n

The duck egg producer, Clarence Court, also said in a statement that \u201cit is a feat of remarkably slim odds that a duckling has been hatched.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDuck egg production is a very small industry, and the separation of males from females relies wholly upon the skill of very few qualified people,\u201d the company says.<\/p>\n

They also claim that hatching chicken eggs would be even less likely as their gender markers are more distinguishable than those of a duck\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost drakes [male ducks] can be spotted by a little curl to the tail feathers, although not all of the drakes possess this visual marker,\u201d the company says.<\/p>\n

Indeed, it may have been that flirty tail feather that made this grocery miracle possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur ducks are kept in small flocks with access to the outdoors every day,\u201d the company explains. \u201cIn this open-air environment, while it is infrequent, our ducks may attract the attention of wild drakes.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
