“#’Dune’ gets delayed, will now hit theaters in 2021<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Anybody planning on seeing a movie in 2020 better add it to their calendar in pencil.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures\u2019 \u201cDune\u201d became the latest in a slew of Hollywood films to delay its release due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Director Denis Villeneuve\u2019s big-budget adaptation of Frank Herbert\u2019s novel, starring Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, will shift from Dec. 18 to Oct. 21, 2021, Warner Bros. said.<\/p>\n

Studios initially pushed release dates only slightly at the onset of the pandemic but found that many cinemas remained closed months later. So, more dramatic schedule changes \u2014 sometimes to more than a year from now \u2014 have become the norm.<\/p>\n

In September, Disney kicked several major 2020 movies<\/a> to 2021, including Marvel\u2019s \u201cBlack Widow\u201d (May 7) and Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cWest Side Story\u201d (Dec. 10). Last week, the new James Bond film, \u201cNo Time To Die\u201d announced it will debut April 2, 2021 instead of this November. With six years since \u201cSpectre,\u201d this marks the longest gap between 007 movies since 1989\u2019s \u201cLicense to Kill\u201d and 1995\u2019s \u201cGoldenEye.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hollywood turned especially skittish after Warner Bros. premiered Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cTenet\u201d in September in an uncertain marketplace to middling results at the box office. Domestically, \u201cTenet\u201d has made just $45 million. By contrast, Nolan\u2019s hit WWII drama \u201cDunkirk\u201d had taken in $168.5 million by its fifth week of release. Adding to the troubles, movie theaters are still legally prohibited from opening in New York \u2014 one of the country\u2019s largest markets.<\/p>\n

As a result of the lack of tentpole films, the Regal cinema chain said Monday it will temporarily shut all 536 of its US theaters, which reopened in August.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
