Amira\u2019s uncle, Ibrahim, was represented by high-profile lawyer Lawrence Greenspon. The feds informed Greenspon of the operation on Sunday. Global News reported that Canada\u2019s special forces were <strong>\u201cinstrumental\u201d<\/strong> in getting Amira out of Syria.<\/p>\n<p>And <strong>Ralph Goodale<\/strong> is headed to London. The lion of the Liberal Party lost his Saskatchewan seat last year and, this past March, was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2020\/03\/31\/prime-minister-announces-special-advisor-canadas-ongoing-response\">named<\/a> special government advisor on the <strong>Flight 752 tragedy<\/strong>. Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/goodale-high-commissioner-uk-1.5750838\">appointed Goodale<\/a> as Canada\u2019s high commissioner in the U.K. He\u2019ll take over for\u00a0Janice Charette, a Harper-era clerk of the Privy Council.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elizabeth May<\/strong>, who\u2019s still the Green Party\u2019s parliamentary leader, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thepeterboroughexaminer.com\/ts\/politics\/2020\/10\/05\/greens-slam-other-parties-for-refusing-to-show-leaders-courtesy-to-annamie-paul.html\">lashed out yesterday<\/a> at the NDP for running a candidate in the upcoming Toronto Centre by-election, where brand-new Green leader <strong>Annamie Paul<\/strong> hopes to topple broadcaster-turned-Liberal <strong>Marci Ien<\/strong>. May cited a tradition, known as a \u201cleader\u2019s courtesy,\u201d that reduces competition for new party leaders so they can gain a seat in the Commons. But typically, seat-less leaders afforded that gesture run in safe seats. Toronto Centre, a Liberal bastion, is not that. May\u2019s seat is as safe as it gets for Greens. Elmer MacKay gave up his Nova Scotia seat to <strong>Brian Mulroney<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.macleans.ca\/article\/1983\/9\/12\/mulroney-goes-to-ottawa\">in 1983<\/a>. Preston Manning gave way to <strong>Stephen Harper<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.ca\/content.aspx?section=res&amp;dir=rep\/off\/ovr_2002&amp;document=synopsis&amp;lang=e#d\">in 2002<\/a>. May could follow\u00a0<em>that<\/em> tradition, if she so chose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To mask or not to mask?<\/strong>\u00a0A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/acs-aec.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/masks-Out.pdf\">new poll from\u00a0Leger<\/a>, in partnership with the Association for Canadian Studies, reveals that <strong>Americans are much likelier to wear masks<\/strong> outdoors than Canadians (48 per cent versus 17 per cent). Canadian respondents who identified with a visible minority were far more likely (57 per cent) than white respondents (13 per cent). Only 11 per cent of Albertans wear masks outdoors, compared to 23 per cent of Ontarians.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump proves narcissism is no cure for COVID-19:<\/strong> The president\u2019s bout with COVID-19 mixes a dash of karma with a spell of schadenfreude, writes Andrew MacDougall in\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>. And while leaders who battle serious health issues often emerge more popular\u2014see <strong>Ronald Reagan<\/strong> in 1981 and <strong>Boris Johnson<\/strong> earlier this year\u2014they tend to exhibit some humility in recovery. In this scenario, Trump and his advisers are the pathogens, not the victims of disease.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yesterday, as his doctors insisted Trump was well on his way to a clean bill of health, the president got to his usual habit of <strong>tweeting<\/strong>. Trump announced his imminent discharge from hospital and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1313186529058136070\">implored<\/a> Americans: \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid of COVID. Don\u2019t let it dominate your life.\u201d He\u2019d earlier fired off a cavalcade of issues-based tweets\u2014e.g. \u201cSTOCK MARKET HIGHS. VOTE!\u201d\u2014that offered an <strong>admittedly bizarre ranking<\/strong> of the importance of said issues to his base. The top three most-liked tweets <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ealed to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1313072768372617217\">anti-abortion crowd<\/a>, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1313074061757554688\">\u201cfake news\u201d haters<\/a>\u00a0and whoever it is who <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1313071950781181953\">loves Space Force<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AbigailBimman\/status\/1313157709043298306\">acknowledged<\/a> yesterday that last month, when he felt <strong>a tickle in his throat<\/strong>, he got tested for COVID-19. The test came back negative.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, watch for a new report from the <strong>Parliamentary Budget Office<\/strong> on the Liberals\u2019 five-year, <strong>$900-million<\/strong> \u201cInnovation\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Superclusters<\/span>\u00a0Initiative.\u201d Earlier this year, <em>iPolitics<\/em> reported the government had doled out just a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ipolitics.ca\/2020\/02\/14\/fraction-of-funding-for-federal-superclusters-plan-spent-to-date\/\">small fraction of that sum<\/a>\u00a0since the program\u2019s unveiling in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Maverick Party<\/strong>, a pro-Western independence party led by former Conservative cabmin <strong>Jay Hill<\/strong>, will target 49 super-conservative ridings in the next election. Hill <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hilltimes.com\/2020\/10\/05\/maverick-party-to-target-49-strong-conservative-ridings-in-western-canada-in-the-next-election\/266209\">told the\u00a0<em>Hill Times<\/em><\/a> that his party would only contest ridings where the combined left-of-centre vote was marginal enough that none of them could sneak up the middle.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s nascent Wexit movement will face an electoral test in Saskatchewan on Oct. 26. The province\u2019s Buffalo Party\u00a0<strong>published its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net\/wexitsask\/pages\/22\/attachments\/original\/1601855795\/buffalo_party_platform.pdf\">full platform<\/a><\/strong> yesterday\u2014a list of promises that doesn\u2019t include sovereignty. The party wants to move to an <strong>American-style election<\/strong> of Saskatchewan\u2019s lieutenant-governor and judges.
