\n Who knew the deep-voiced could be so shallow.<\/p>\n

In a revelation that should alarm anyone blessed with a manly James Earl Jones baritone, Chinese researchers found that men with deeper voices are more likely to cheat on their partner. The sound-breaking study was published in the journal \u201cPersonality and Individual Differences\u201d<\/a> and app<\/a>roved by the Ethics Committee of Southwest University.<\/p>\n

Indeed, while females largely find lower acoustics more arousing, masculine-sounding men are also \u201cmore likely to engage in infidelity\u201d than \u201cfeminine men,\u201d researchers said.<\/p>\n

The scientists reached this nest-wrecking conclusion by surveying an anonymous group of heterosexual, Mandarin-speaking university students \u2014 comprised of 116 men and 145 women \u2014 who were involved in brief flings.<\/p>\n

After recording their voices to gauge their pitch, the team asked participants how likely they were to remain faithful to their partners on a scale of 1 to 7.<\/p>\n

While they found no strong correlation between female voices and philandering, men with deeper timbres were more likely to fool around with different women, per the study. They deduced that these low-octave cat callers \u201cenhance their status among other men or their attractiveness to women, thereby increasing their chances of obtaining more or higher-quality partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

A previous study in 2013 also found a link<\/a> between pitch and promiscuity, reporting that the more women thought these men would cheat, the more they were attracted to them for a brief relationship when they are less worried about fidelity.<\/p>\n

On a biological level, lower voices indicate higher testosterone levels, which has been shown to \u201cinterfere with romantic relationship functioning\u201d by promoting promiscuous behavior, according to the researchers behind the new study.<\/p>\n

By contrast, men with lower testosterone, and therefore, higher voices, tend to have higher long-term marital satisfaction and lower divorce rates, per the study.<\/p>\n

But before squeaky-voiced love seekers rejoice, they should note that the study has more than a few caveats.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, the participants were university students with a narrow age range\u201d who were involved in transient relationships, according to the study. As a result, their perspective on dating and marriage differs considerably from that of an adult.<\/p>\n

The researchers also acknowledged that they \u201cdiscuss the study based on research conducted in western cultures, because few studies have examined vocal characteristics based on Chinese participants.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the future, they hope to conduct further studies on the subject that span different populations and factor in age ranges and even hormone levels.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
